Savings Hen Virus

What is Savings Hen?
Developed by Smart Apps, the Savings Hen browser add-on claims to enhance users' Internet browsing experience by enabling comparison shopping and displaying special offers when users visit online shopping websites. While such functionality may seem legitimate, be aware that the Savings Hen add-on is categorized as adware or a potentially unwanted application.
Developers of this browser plug-in use a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling', thus, many users install this browser add-on inadvertently without their consent. After successful infiltration, Savings Hen generates intrusive online advertisements by converting words on pages viewed into hyperlinks that link to advertisements.
Furthermore, the add-on continually displays banner, shopping comparison, in-text transitional, and in-text link advertisements. Clicking these ads can lead to installation of additional adware or even malware infections.
Following successful infiltration, Savings Hen monitors and records the domain names of pages viewed, IP addresses, search terms entered in Internet search engines (Google, Bing, and Yahoo), and other information, which can be personally identifiable. This tracking can lead to privacy issues and identity theft.
You are advised to eliminate this adware from your Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox). At time of research, this potentially unwanted application was distributed using freeware downloads (deceptive free software download clients) and fake downloads (fake Java updates, browser updates, etc.)
Savings Hen adware is similar to other unwanted ads-generating browser plug-ins including, for example, SavePass, Bubble Dock, MarkKit, and Deal Finder. These browser extensions install on browsers when downloading or installing free software, and while they promise to enhance the browsing experience by adding various useful features, they add no real value.
The main purpose of browser plug-ins such as these is to generate revenue from intrusive ads and user tracking. To avoid installation of this adware, be attentive when downloading and installing freeware. When downloading free software, inspect each step and decline installation of any advertised browser extensions.
