Yula Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Yula?
Developed by SuperWeb LLC, the Yula rogue browser extension claims to improve the quality of users' Internet browsing experience by displaying website trust ratings, websites containing related content, comparison shopping, coupons, and adding other useful functionality.
Although Yula may seem a legitimate add-on, it is categorized as a potentially unwanted application or adware. Yula uses a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling' (stealth installation of additional applications together with the chosen software) to install on Internet browsers without users' permission.
After successful infiltration on Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, and Google Chrome, Yula monitors users' Internet browsing activity by recording information such as IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries entered, and other similar hardware and software information.
In addition, this rogue browser add-on generates various intrusive online advertisements including text-link, search, banner, interstitial, transitional, and full page ads. This behavior may lead to serious privacy issues or malware infections.
At time of research, SuperWeb LLC has released over one hundred rogue browser plug-ins (including, for example, Web Flipper, Webbelse, Norpalla, and BeatTool) identical to Yula. This company releases identical browser add-ons under different names to avoid detection by legitimate anti-spyware and anti-virus programs.
None of these plugins add any real value for the user - their purpose is to generate income by the display of intrusive online advertisements.
Most current freeware download websites (including, for example, download.com, soft32.com, softonic.com, and many others) employ small programs called 'download clients' to monetize their free services. Download clients offer installation of advertised 'legitimate' browser extensions together with the chosen free software.
Thus, reckless downloading and installation of freeware risks computer infection with adware or malware. To avoid installation of Yula, or other potentially unwanted applications, pay close attention during the download of free software and never accept installation of additional applications offered.
If you are installing downloaded software, select the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Typical' or 'Quick' - this will reveal any hidden applications attempting stealth installation on your computer, and you will be able to decline them.
Internet users who have already installed Yula and observe "Powered by Yula", "Yula Deals", and "Ads by Yula" advertisements when browsing the Internet, should follow this removal guide to remove Yula from their Internet browsers.
