Websteroids Virus

What is Websteroids?
Websteroids is a potentially unwanted application developed by Creative Island Media LLC. This browser add-on allows users to play the game 'Asteroids' whilst browsing the Internet. The application, however, installs without consent and causes various intrusive ads.
Commonly, computer users install this plugin together with free software downloaded from the Internet. Developers of this browser extension use a deceptive software marketing method called 'bundling'.
After successful installation, Websteroids tracks users' Internet browsing activities by recording IP addresses, unique identifier numbers, operating systems, browsers, web page URLs visited, search queries entered, and other software information. Furthermore, this adware generates banner, in-text, and interstitial advertisements.
Having this plugin installed on your Internet browsers (Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox) can result in high-risk malware infections and privacy issues. Internet users should be aware that, today, most software download websites use 'download clients' to monetize their free services.
Download clients are small programs offering installation of advertised browser plugins, and thus, reckless freeware downloading can result in installation of Websteroids or other potentially unwanted applications. For these reasons, you are advised to remove this adware from your Internet browser/s.
Websteroids is similar to other adware, which infiltrate users' Internet browsers through free software downloads. Examples include Spy Alert, Search Donkey, and Spy Guard. The aforementioned browser plug-ins claim to enhance users' Internet browsing experience, however, rather than delivering any benefits, users are presented with intrusive ads.
To avoid installation of such potentially unwanted applications, users should express caution when downloading and installing free software. When downloading freeware, inspect each download step and opt-out of installation of advertised browser extensions by clicking the 'decline' button.
When installing downloaded programs, choose the 'Advanced' or 'Custom' installation options, rather than 'Typical' or 'Quick' - this will reveal any intended installation of bundled browser plug-ins. If you observe ads generated by Websteroids, use the removal instructions provided to eliminate this adware from your computer.
