What kind of malware is ReaderUpdate?
ReaderUpdate is a piece of malicious software targeting Mac operating systems. It is a loader – i.e., this program can introduce additional malware or malicious content into devices.
ReaderUpdate has been around since at least 2020. There are multiple variants of this loader written in different programming languages.
ReaderUpdate malware overview
There are several different versions of ReaderUpdate written in Python, Rust, Nim, Crystal, and Go programming languages. All variants were designed for the x86 Intel architecture – hence, this malware will not run on Mac with Apple silicon without Rosetta 2 installed.
This program has anti-analysis capabilities. ReaderUpdate is classed as a loader – a type of malware that can cause chain infections by downloading/installing additional malicious programs or components onto systems.
After this loader connects to its C&C (Command and Control) server, it can receive and execute (practically) any kind of command. The most recently discovered ReaderUpdate version (written in Go) has been observed infiltrating into devices the Genieo unwanted application that has adware and browser-hijacking abilities.
However, this program could be used to cause different types of infections – trojans, ransomware, cryptocurrency miners, and other malware.
It is noteworthy that the developers of malicious software often improve upon their creations and methodologies. Therefore, potential future iterations of ReaderUpdate could have additional/different capabilities and features.
In summary, the presence of software like ReaderUpdate on devices can lead to multiple system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Mac-specific malware examples
We have written about numerous malicious programs; FrigidStealer, FlexibleFerret, LightSpy, and Multiverze are merely some of our newest articles on ones targeting macOS.
Malware can have a wide variety of functionalities that are not limited to its classification. Malicious programs are also commonly used in tandem with others.
Yet regardless of how malware operates – its presence on a system endangers device integrity and user safety. Therefore, all threats must be eliminated immediately upon detection.
How did ReaderUpdate infiltrate my computer?
ReaderUpdate has been spread through freeware and third-party download websites. This program was disguised as legitimate/ordinary content or through genuine software that has been trojanized (utility and optimization tools, etc.).
Other disguises and distribution methods are possible. Phishing and social engineering techniques are standard in malware distribution. Virulent files come in various formats, e.g., archives (RAR, ZIP, etc.), executables (.exe, .run, etc.), documents (PDF, Microsoft Office, Microsoft OneNote, etc.), JavaScript, and so forth. Merely opening a malicious file can be enough to initiate the infection chain.
Malware is primarily proliferated via untrustworthy download channels (e.g., unofficial and free file-hosting sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.), drive-by (stealthy/deceptive) downloads, malicious attachments/links in spam (e.g., emails, DMs/PMs, social media posts, etc.), malvertising, online scams, pirated content, illegal software activation tools ("cracks"), and fake updates.
What is more, some malicious programs can self-spread through local networks and removable storage devices (e.g., external hard drives, USB flash drives, etc.).
How to avoid installation of malware?
We strongly recommend downloading only from official and verified sources. Programs must be activated and updated using legitimate functions/tools, as illegal activation ("cracking") tools and third-party updates can contain malware.
Another recommendation is to be careful while browsing since the Internet is rife with deceptive and malicious content. Treat incoming emails and other messages with caution. Attachments or links found in suspicious/irrelevant mail must not be opened, as they can be virulent.
We must emphasize the importance of having a reputable anti-virus installed and kept up-to-date. Security software must be used to run regular system scans and to remove detected threats. If your computer is already infected, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate infiltrated malware.
