What is the fake "Grass Foundation" website?

IMPORTANT NOTE: We do not review crypto projects, please do your own research when investing money.

Federal Trade Comission (FTC) states that since the start of 2021, more than 46,000 people have reported losing over $1 billion in crypto to scams – that's about one out of every four dollars reported lost, more than any other payment method.

Fake "Grass Foundation" website overview

We discovered this scam on claim-grassfoundation.pages[.]dev, but it could be hosted on other domains as well. The fraudulent webpage imitates Getgrass (Grass) – a network that allows users to monetize their unused Internet resources; this is facilitated through a browser extension that undertakes data collection whenever the Internet connection is idle.

It must be stressed that this fake page is not associated with the actual Getgrass network (getgrass.io) or any other existing projects, platforms, and entities.

When an attempt is made to link a digital wallet, an error occurs, and the user is asked to connect manually by entering their passphrase. Phishing websites record provided information. Hence, by entering their log-in credentials into this page – users expose their cryptowallets (and the funds stored therein) to cyber criminals.

The scope of the financial loss depends on the value of the stolen digital assets. It must be mentioned that due to the nearly untraceable nature of cryptocurrency transactions – they cannot be reversed. Therefore, victims of scams like this fake "Grass Foundation" website cannot recover their funds.

Cryptocurrency-centered scam examples

"Dotmoovs", "AxiomNet", "Permaswap Staking", and "Join MetaMask 3.0" are merely a few of our latest articles on crypto-specific schemes.

In most cases, these scams operate by phishing for wallet log-in credentials, using draining mechanisms to siphon funds from wallets (drainers), or tricking users into manually transferring assets to scammer-owned wallets.

Scams use various lures; cryptocurrency-targeting schemes commonly rely on imitator sites, giveaways/airdrops/rewards, new coin/token promotions, pre-sale events, account/wallet issues, security upgrades, etc.

While online scams are often poorly constructed and full of mistakes, they can be competently made and even convincingly disguised as content associated with legitimate entities (e.g., corporations, companies, organizations, service providers, etc.).

How did I open a scam website?

In general, online scams are promoted through webpages using rogue advertising networks, intrusive advertisements (malvertising), spam (e.g., emails, DMs/PMs, social media posts, SMSes, browser notifications, etc.), misspelled URLs (typosquatting), and adware.

It is pertinent to mention that crypto-centered scams are prevalent on social media networks; we have discovered many instances of their promotion on X (more commonly referred to by its former name – Twitter). These spam posts and direct/private messages (DMs/PMs) can be made using accounts stolen from real projects, companies, organizations, entrepreneurs, celebrities, influencers, and so on.

It is also worth mentioning that crypto drainers are endorsed via intrusive pop-up adverts. Some are fully functional drainers themselves; they entice users into "connecting" digital wallets by promising various boons. These pop-ups have been encountered on genuine sites that had been hacked.

How to avoid visiting scam websites?

Caution is essential to ensuring online safety. Therefore, be mindful of ads and sites which make promises that sound too good to be true. Take note of URLs and type them carefully. Do not use websites offering pirated content or other questionable services (e.g., illegal streaming/downloading Torrenting, etc.), as these webpages are typically monetized through rogue advertising networks.

Do not permit dubious pages to display browser notifications; instead, ignore or deny such requests (i.e., press "Block", "Block Notifications", etc.). Treat incoming emails and other messages with vigilance; do not open attachments or links found in suspicious/irrelevant mail.

Download only from official/verified sources and approach installations with care (e.g., study terms and options, use "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt out of additional apps, extensions, tools, etc.) – to prevent bundled/harmful software (like adware) from infiltrating the system.

If your computer is already infected, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate all threats.

How to identify a pop-up scam?

Pop-up windows with various fake messages are a common type of lures cybercriminals use. They collect sensitive personal data, trick Internet users into calling fake tech support numbers, subscribe to useless online services, invest in shady cryptocurrency schemes, etc.

While in the majority of cases these pop-ups don't infect users' devices with malware, they can cause direct monetary loss or could result in identity theft.

Cybercriminals strive to create their rogue pop-up windows to look trustworthy, however, scams typically have the following characteristics:

  • Spelling mistakes and non-professional images - Closely inspect the information displayed in a pop-up. Spelling mistakes and unprofessional images could be a sign of a scam.
  • Sense of urgency - Countdown timer with a couple of minutes on it, asking you to enter your personal information or subscribe to some online service.
  • Statements that you won something - If you haven't participated in a lottery, online competition, etc., and you see a pop-up window stating that you won.
  • Computer or mobile device scan - A pop-up window that scans your device and informs of detected issues - is undoubtedly a scam; webpages cannot perform such actions.
  • Exclusivity - Pop-up windows stating that only you are given secret access to a financial scheme that can quickly make you rich.
