How to eliminate the ChipsOverallKind adware from your Mac
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is ChipsOverallKind?
ChipsOverallKind is a rogue application found by our research team during a routine investigation of new file submissions to the VirusTotal platform.
Upon inspection, we determined that this app is adware from the AdLoad malware family. ChipsOverallKind runs intrusive advertisement campaigns and may exhibit other harmful capabilities.
ChipsOverallKind adware overview
Adware generates revenue through advertising. It typically does so by running intrusive advertisement campaigns. This entails displaying third-party graphical content (e.g., pop-ups, coupons, surveys, overlays, etc.) on visited websites and/or other interfaces.
It is noteworthy that specific conditions may be necessary for this software to operate as designed (e.g., compatible browser/system, visits to particular sites, etc.). However, regardless of whether ChipsOverallKind delivers advertisements – its presence on a system endangers device/user safety.
Adware-displayed ads primarily promote online scams, untrustworthy/hazardous software, and potential malware. Some intrusive adverts can even be triggered (by being clicked) to execute scripts that perform stealthy downloads/installations.
Keep in mind that while legitimate products or services may be encountered via these advertisements – they are unlikely to be endorsed in this manner by any official parties. It is most probably done by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs to acquire illegitimate commissions for the promotion.
It is worth mentioning that AdLoad applications commonly have browser-hijacking capabilities – however, we did not observe these qualities while analyzing ChipsOverallKind.
Advertising-supported software usually has data-tracking functionalities, and this might be true of the ChipsOverallKind app. Information of interest can include: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, Internet cookies, log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, etc. The collected data can be monetized via sale to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of software like ChipsOverallKind on devices may lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have examined numerous adware samples; StandartPartition, DominantGeneration, and ExtendedCommand are merely a couple of our newest finds.
Software within this classification tends to look ordinary and harmless. It can also offer a broad range of functionalities that rarely work as promised, if at all. Note that operational features do not guarantee that a piece of software is legitimate or safe.
How did ChipsOverallKind install on my computer?
The bundling marketing technique, which involves packing regular program installation setups with unwanted/malicious additions – is often used to proliferate adware.
The threat of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from freeware and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, and other untrustworthy sources. This risk is compounded by rushing through installation processes, e.g., ignoring terms, skipping steps, using "Easy/Quick" settings, and so on.
Furthermore, adware is endorsed on legitimate-looking download webpages and scam sites. Users mainly access these pages via redirects caused by websites utilizing rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, intrusive ads, spam browser notifications, or installed adware (with the ability to force-open webpages).
Intrusive advertisements also spread advertising-supported software. Once clicked on, some of the adverts can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We recommend researching software and downloading it only from official/verified channels. Installation processes must be treated with care, e.g., by reading terms, reviewing available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, features, etc.
Another recommendation is to be careful while browsing since fraudulent and malicious online content typically appears legitimate and innocuous. For example, despite their harmless appearance – intrusive ads redirect to unreliable and questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, scam-promoting, adult dating, etc.).
If you keep encountering adverts and/or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with ChipsOverallKind, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
