Ravenwise adware overview

Adware operates by running intrusive advert campaigns. This software displays third-party graphical content (e.g., pop-ups, overlays, coupons, surveys, etc.) on visited websites and/or different interfaces.

It must be mentioned that adware might not operate as designed if the browser/system or user geolocation is incompatible, specific sites are not visited, or other conditions are unsuitable. However, even if Ravenwise does not deliver advertisements – its presence on a system remains a threat.

Adware-displayed ads primarily endorse online scams, untrustworthy/harmful software, and even malware. Some of these adverts are capable of performing stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.

It is pertinent to mention that any genuine content encountered via these advertisements is most likely promoted by scammers who abuse its affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.

While some Pirrit applications possess browser hijacker abilities, Ravenwise did not exhibit these functionalities during testing.

Furthermore, this rogue application might collect sensitive user information. Data of interest may include: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, Internet cookies, account log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, finance-related information, and so on. The gathered data can then be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.

To summarize, the presence of advertising-supported software like Ravenwise on devices may result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Adware examples

We have investigated numerous adware samples; AtechnyPipidaeFrontierProcessor, and PlatformProduct are merely a few of our latest finds.

Software within this classification typically appears legitimate and offers a broad range of functionalities. However, these features seldom work as promised, and in most cases – they are utterly nonoperational. Keep in mind that functional features do not guarantee a software's legitimacy or safety.

How did Ravenwise install on my computer?

Adware can be bundled with (packed alongside) ordinary programs. The threat of inadvertently permitting access for bundled content into the device is increased by downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and free file-hosting websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installations (e.g., using "Quick/Easy" settings, etc.).

Adware can also have "official" promotional webpages, and it is endorsed on deceptive/scam sites. Users primarily enter these pages via redirects generated by websites utilizing rogue advertising networks, mistyped URLs, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).

Advertising-supported software is spread by intrusive adverts as well. Once clicked on, some of these advertisements can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.

How to avoid installation of adware?

It is essential to research software prior to downloading or purchasing it. All downloads must be performed from official and trustworthy sources. When installing, we recommend reading terms, inspecting available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of additional apps, extensions, tools, and so forth.

Another recommendation is to be careful while browsing since fake and malicious online content usually appears genuine and innocuous. For example, despite their ordinary/harmless appearance – intrusive ads redirect to unreliable and questionable sites (e.g., scam-promoting, pornography, adult dating, gambling, etc.).

If you keep encountering advertisements and/or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Ravenwise, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
