How to eliminate LogOffNode adware and the advertisement it delivers
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is LogOffNode?
During a routine inspection of new submissions to the VirusTotal website, our researchers found the LogOffNode application. After investigating it, we determined that it is advertising-supported software (adware). LogOffNode is part of the AdLoad malware family.
LogOffNode adware overview
Adware is designed to enable the placement of advertisements on various interfaces. These ads primarily endorse online scams, unreliable/dangerous software, and potential malware. Some of the adverts can be triggered (i.e., by being clicked) to execute scripts that perform downloads/installations without user permission.
Note that while genuine products or services may be encountered via adware-displayed advertisements – they are unlikely to be promoted in this fashion by any official parties. It is most probable that this promotion is undertaken by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs to acquire illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software might not run intrusive advertisement campaigns if certain conditions are unsuitable (e.g., incompatible browser/system, specific websites are not visited, etc.). Even if LogOffNode does not display ads – it endangers device integrity and user safety.
Additionally, AdLoad apps often have browser-hijacking functionalities, but we did not observe these abilities while investigating LogOffNode.
Adware usually gathers private information, and this might apply to the LogOffNode application. Targeted data may include: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and so forth. This sensitive information can then be monetized via sale to third-parties.
To summarize, the presence of software like LogOffNode on devices may result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have examined numerous adware samples; ActivityConsole, WinPersonalWebsite, and WirePersonalTech are but a few of our newest finds. Software within this classification rarely appears suspicious, it tends to look legitimate and ordinary. Despite offering various "useful" and "advantageous" functionalities – it seldom works as promised.
However, it must be stressed that even if an app or a browser extension operates as indicated by its promotional material – that is not a guarantee of either legitimacy or safety.
How did LogOffNode install on my computer?
Adware can have "official" promotional pages, and it is endorsed on deceptive/scam websites. Users primarily enter these webpages via redirects generated by spam browsing notifications, sites using rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening abilities).
Additionally, advertising-supported software can be bundled with (packed alongside) regular programs. Download from untrustworthy sources (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., skipped steps/sections, used "Quick/Easy" settings, etc.) – increase the risk of inadvertently permitting access for bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements also proliferate adware. Some of the adverts can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We recommend researching software and downloading it only from official/verified channels. When installing, it is essential to read terms, inspect available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt out of all additions (e.g., apps, extensions, features, tools, etc.).
We also advise being vigilant while browsing since fake account malicious online content usually appears genuine and harmless. For example, intrusive advertisements may look innocuous – yet redirect to unreliable and questionable sites (e.g., scam-promoting, pornography, adult dating, gambling, etc.).
If you keep encountering ads and/or redirects of this kind, inspect the device and immediately remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with LogOffNode, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What harm can adware cause?
Adware can decrease browsing quality and system performance. It displays ads that promote content capable of causing system infections, privacy issues, financial losses, and other serious problems. This software also tends to have data-tracking abilities – therefore, it is considered to be a privacy threat.
What does adware do?
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It operates by displaying adverts on visited websites and/or other interfaces. This software might also be capable of force-opening sites and gathering sensitive data.
How do adware developers generate revenue?
Most of the profit comes from affiliate programs. Adware developers may earn commissions from ad clicks, site visits, file downloads, product purchases, service subscriptions, or similar.
Will Combo Cleaner remove LogOffNode adware?
Yes, Combo Cleaner will scan your computer and eliminate adware-type apps installed. Keep in mind that manual removal (unaided by security software) might not be a perfect solution. In some cases, even after the adware has been manually removed – file remnants stay hidden within the system. The remaining components might continue to run and cause issues. Hence, it is paramount to eliminate advertising-supported software thoroughly.
