Removal instructions for the UpperTheory adware-type app
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of application is UpperTheory?
While reviewing new file submissions to the VirusTotal platform, our research team discovered the UpperTheory application. We determined that it is advertising-supporting software (adware) belonging to the AdLoad malware family. This app is designed to run intrusive advert campaigns.
UpperTheory adware overview
Adware delivers intrusive ad campaigns by displaying third-party graphical content (e.g., pop-ups, banners, coupons, surveys, overlays, etc.) on various interfaces.
These advertisements primarily promote online scams, unreliable/dangerous software, and even malware. Once clicked on, some of the adverts can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user permission.
Note that while legitimate products and services may be encountered through these ads – they are unlikely to be endorsed in this fashion by any official parties. It is most probable that this promotion is undertaken by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.
Advertising-supported software might require specific conditions to display advertisements (e.g., compatible browser/system or user geolocation, visits to particular sites, etc.). However, regardless of whether UpperTheory delivers ads – its presence on a system remains a threat to device/user safety.
AdLoad applications often have browser-hijacking abilities, but we did not observe these functionalities while investigating UpperTheory.
Adware usually gathers private information, and this might apply to the UpperTheory app. Targeted data may include: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, credit card numbers, and so forth. The collected information can then be shared with or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of software like UpperTheory on devices may lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have examined numerous adware samples; LogFormula, GraphicsReviewScript, and HardDriveQueryWave are merely a couple of our newest finds.
Advertising-supported software typically appears legitimate and innocuous. Users are lured into downloading/installing the software by promises of various handy functionalities, which are rarely operational.
It must be stressed that even if a piece of software works as indicated by its promotional material – that is not definitive proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did UpperTheory install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled with regular programs. The risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from dubious sources (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and by treating installation with negligence (e.g., ignoring terms, using "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.).
Adware can also have "official" promotional webpages, and it is endorsed on deceptive/scam sites. Most visitors access these pages via redirects caused by misspelled URLs, websites employing rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
Advertising-supported software is likewise proliferated by intrusive advertisements. Once clicked on, some of these ads can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software prior to downloading or purchasing it. Additionally, all downloads must be performed from official and verified channels. When installing, we advise reading terms, inspecting available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplements (e.g., apps, extensions, tools, etc.).
Another recommendation is to be vigilant while browsing since fraudulent and dangerous online content usually appears genuine and innocuous. For example, despite their legitimate/harmless appearance – intrusive adverts redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, scam-promoting, adult dating, pornography, etc.).
In case of continuous encounters with such ads/redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with UpperTheory, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
