Removing the FormatClick adware-type application from your Mac
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What kind of application is FormatClick?
While inspecting new submissions to the VirusTotal website, we discovered the FormatClick application. After investigating this piece of software, we determined that FormatClick is adware, and that it is part of the AdLoad malware family.
FormatClick adware overview
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It operates by displaying ads on various interfaces. Note that adware may require specific conditions to run intrusive advertisement campaigns (e.g., compatible browser/system, visits to particular websites, etc.). However, even if FormatClick does not display ads – its presence on a system remains a threat.
Adware-delivered adverts endorse online scams, untrustworthy/harmful software, and even malware. Once clicked on, some of these advertisements are capable of performing downloads/installations without user permission.
It is pertinent to mention that genuine products or services encountered through these ads are most likely to be endorsed by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs in order to obtain illegitimate commissions.
Additionally, AdLoad apps commonly have browser-hijacking functionalities; however, FormatClick did not exhibit any during testing.
Furthermore, FormatClick likely has data-tracking abilities. Targeted information may include: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related information, and so forth. The collected data can then be sold to third-parties and/or otherwise abused for profit.
To summarize, the presence of advertising-supported software like FormatClick on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have analyzed thousands of adware-type applications; ResultsDisplay, ViewInput, and WebEnumerator are merely a few examples.
Advertising-supported software usually appears legitimate and harmless. However, the functionalities it promises are rarely operational. It must be stressed that even if a piece of software works as indicated by its promotional material – that is not a guarantee of either legitimacy or safety.
How did FormatClick install on my computer?
Adware often has "official" promotional webpages, and it is endorsed on scam sites. Most users enter these pages via redirects caused by websites using rogue advertising networks, mistyped URLs, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
Advertising-supported software can also be bundled (packed together) with regular programs. The risk of allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from dubious sources (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by rushing through installation processes (e.g., using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.).
Additionally, adware is spread by intrusive advertisements. When clicked on, some of these adverts can perform stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We highly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified channels. Furthermore, installation processes must be treated with caution. Therefore, we advise reading terms, studying available options, using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opting out of all additional apps, extensions, tools, etc.
Another recommendation is to be careful while browsing since fake and dangerous content usually appears legitimate and innocuous. For example, intrusive ads may look ordinary/harmless yet redirect to unreliable/questionable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.).
In case of encounters with adverts and/or redirects of this kind, check the device and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with FormatClick, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
