How to remove ResultsDisplay adware from the operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What kind of application is ResultsDisplay?
ResultsDisplay is a rogue application we discovered while investigating new submissions to the VirusTotal website. Our analysis of this app revealed that it is adware. ResultsDisplay is part of the AdLoad malware family.
ResultsDisplay adware overview
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It is designed to feed users with advertisements. This third-party graphical content can be displayed on visited websites and/or other interfaces.
The ads endorse various scams, unreliable/harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive adverts can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
Note that any legitimate products or services encountered through these advertisements are unlikely to be promoted by their developers or other official parties. It is most probable that this promotion is undertaken by scammers who abuse the content's affiliate programs in order to obtain illegitimate commissions.
Specific conditions, such as a compatible browser/system or user geolocation, visits to particular sites, and others – may be necessary for adware to run intrusive ad campaigns. Regardless of whether ResultsDisplay displays adverts – its presence on a system remains a threat.
AdLoad apps often have browser-hijacking functionalities, although ResultsDisplay did not exhibit any during testing. Additionally, this rogue application likely has data-tracking functionalities.
Information of interest may include: browsing and search engine histories, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related data, and so on. The collected information can be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.
To summarize, the presence of advertising-supported software like ResultsDisplay on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have inspected countless adware-type applications; ActiveProtocol, WebEnumerator, and AnalyzerMachine are just a few examples.
Advertising-supported software typically appears legitimate and ordinary. Fake functionalities are usually employed to lure users into downloading/installing this software. Keep in mind that even if an app or a browser extension operates as promised – that is not definitive proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did ResultsDisplay install on my computer?
Adware can be bundled with regular programs. The risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and by approaching installation processes with negligence (e.g., ignoring terms, using "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.).
Additionally, adware can have "official" promotional pages, and it is endorsed on scam websites. Users primarily access these webpages via redirects caused by sites using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive adverts, mistyped URLs, or installed adware (with browser force-opening abilities).
Intrusive advertisements also spread advertising-supported software. When clicked on, some of these ads can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user permission.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software prior to downloading or purchasing it. Installation processes must be approached with care, e.g., by reading terms, exploring available options, using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opting out of all supplementary apps, extensions, features, etc.
We advise being cautious while browsing since fake and dangerous online content usually appears legitimate and innocuous. For example, intrusive advertisements may look harmless – however, they redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., scam-promoting, pornography, gambling, adult dating, etc.).
In case of continuous encounters with adverts and/or redirects of this type, check the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with ResultsDisplay, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
