Removing the Tally Tab browser hijacker and the redirects it generates
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What kind of software is Tally Tab?
While inspecting untrustworthy websites, our research team discovered the Tally Tab browser extension. It is endorsed as a calculator widget for browsers. However, after analyzing Tally Tab, we determined that it is a browser hijacker. This extension modifies browsers to generate redirects.
Tally Tab browser hijacker overview
Browser-hijacking software assigns promoted sites as browsers' default search engines, homepages, and new browser tab/window URLs. Due to these notifications, new browser tabs/windows opened and Web searches performed via the URL bar – result in redirects to the endorsed website.
In most cases, browser hijackers push fake search engines that are incapable of providing search results and redirect to genuine Internet search websites. However, at the time of research, Tally Tab generated redirects to the legitimate Bing search engine (bing.com). Keep in mind that this may differ, as redirects can be influenced by factors like user geolocation.
Hijacker software commonly employs persistence-ensuring techniques to complicate its removal – thus preventing users from recovering their browsers.
Furthermore, browser hijackers usually have data-tracking abilities, and this might apply to Tally Tab. Targeted information may include: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, Internet cookies, log-in credentials (usernames/passwords), personally identifiable details, finance-related data, etc. The collected information can be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.
To summarize, browser-hijacking software like Tally Tab can cause system infections, severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even lead to identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples
Sqoo search engine, Calendar New Tab, Quotes Srch Tab, and Volume Extra are just some examples of browser hijackers that we have investigated recently.
This software seldom appears suspicious; it tends to look legitimate and harmless. It also promises a wide variety of useful functions. However, the features rarely work as advertised, and in most cases – they are completely nonoperational.
It must be mentioned that even if a piece of software works as indicated by its promotional material – that is not definitive proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did Tally Tab install on my computer?
We acquired Tally Tab from a deceptive promotional webpage. Browser hijackers are often pushed through seemingly legitimate pages and scam sites. The majority of visitors to these webpages access them via redirects caused by mistyped URLs, websites using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware.
Browser-hijacking software can also be bundled with regular programs. The risk of allowing bundled content into the system is increased by downloading from dubious sources (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and by treating installation processes with negligence (e.g., ignoring terms, skipping sections, using "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.).
Intrusive adverts spread browser hijackers as well. Some of these advertisements can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations upon being clicked.
How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?
We recommend researching software and downloading only from official/trustworthy channels. Another recommendation is to approach installation processes with caution, e.g., by reading terms, inspecting possible options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all additional apps, extensions, and so forth.
We advise being careful while browsing since fake and malicious online content usually appears ordinary and harmless. For example, while intrusive ads may look innocuous – they redirect to unreliable/questionable sites (e.g., pornography, adult dating, gambling, scam-promoting, etc.).
If you keep encountering adverts/redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Tally Tab, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the purpose of forcing users to visit bing.com website?
Cyber criminals (e.g., developers of fake search engines and browser hijackers, etc.) generate revenue through redirects.
How did a browser hijacker infiltrate my computer?
Browser hijackers are primarily distributed via bundled installation setups, deceptive promotional webpages, freeware and free file-hosting websites, online scams, P2P sharing networks, spam browser notifications, and intrusive ads.
Will Combo Cleaner help me remove Tally Tab browser hijacker?
Yes, Combo Cleaner will scan your computer and eliminate installed browser-hijacking applications. It must be mentioned that manual removal (unaided by security software) might not be ideal, particularly when multiple browser hijackers are present. In these cases, after one is removed – the others may simply reinstall it. What is more, removal-related settings might be inaccessible with this software installed. Therefore, browser hijackers must be eliminated thoroughly and all at once.
