Removing Cool Facts browser hijacker and the redirects it causes
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on
What is Cool Facts?
Our researchers discovered Cool Facts while investigating rogue websites. This browser extension supposedly delivers interesting facts and allows users to get wallpapers, clocks, and other content for their new browser tabs. However, our inspection of Cool Facts revealed that it operates as a browser hijacker, i.e., modifies browser settings, causes redirects, and spies on browsing activity.
Cool Facts browser hijacker overview
Once installed on our test machine, Cool Facts changed the browser's default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs to the promoted website.
Typically, browser-hijacking software assigns these settings to the addresses of fake search engines, which cannot generate search results and redirect to genuine ones. However, Cool Facts altered the aforementioned settings to Bing (bing.com). Hence, whenever we opened a new browser tab/window or entered a search query to the URL bar – it resulted in redirects to the legitimate Bing search engine.
In some cases, genuine sites are promoted by cyber criminals (e.g., browser hijacker developers) for the purpose of obtaining fraudulent commissions through the abuse of affiliate programs. However, it must be mentioned that Cool Facts could cause redirects to other websites as well.
Furthermore, like most browser hijackers, Cool Facts employs persistence-ensuring techniques to complicate its removal process.
What is more, this browser extension collects sensitive information. Data of interest may include: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, Internet cookies, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, finance-related information, and so forth. The gathered data can be sold to third-parties or otherwise abused for profit.
To summarize, the presence of browser-hijacking software like Cool Facts on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples
Ring, Sport Engine, and COVID Dashboard are merely a few examples of browser hijackers we have inspected recently.
This software usually appears legitimate and offers "handy" functionalities. However, the promised features seldom work as advertised, and in most cases – they are utterly nonoperational. It must be stressed that even if a piece of software works as indicated by its promotional material – that is not proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did Cool Facts install on my computer?
We obtained Cool Facts from its "official" promotional webpage. In addition to such sites, browser hijackers are often endorsed on scam pages. Users typically enter deceptive webpages via redirects caused by misspelled URLs, websites using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware.
Additionally, browser-hijacking software is proliferated using the bundling marketing technique – packing regular programs with unwanted/malicious supplements. Download from dubious sources (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., used "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.) – increase the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the device.
Intrusive advertisements also distribute browser hijackers. When clicked on, some of the adverts can execute scripts to perform stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified channels. It is just as important to treat installation with caution, e.g., by reading terms, studying available options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting out of all additional apps, extensions, etc.
We advise being vigilant when browsing since fake and malicious content usually appears legitimate. For example, intrusive advertisements may look innocuous yet redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., gambling, adult dating, pornography, etc.).
In case of encounters with such ads and/or redirects, check the system and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Cool Facts, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
