How to remove the Hockey Start browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Hockey Start?
While investigating suspicious websites, our researchers found one endorsing the Hockey Start browser extension. It is presented as a tool for quick access to hockey sports related online content.
However, after we analyzed this extension, we determined that it changes browser settings to promote the search.nstart.online fake search engine. Due to this behavior, Hockey Start is classified as a browser hijacker.
Hockey Start browser hijacker overview
When we installed Hockey Start on our test machine, it reassigned the browser's default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs to the search.nstart.online website. Therefore, when we opened a new browser tab/window or entered a search query into the URL bar – it resulted in a redirect to search.nstart.online.
Illegitimate search engines rarely can provide search results, so they tend to redirect to genuine ones. This also applies to search.nstart.online; at the time of research, it redirected to the Bing search engine (bing.com). However, search.nstart.online might land elsewhere since redirects may be dictated by various factors (e.g., geolocation, etc.).
Furthermore, like most browser hijackers, Hockey Start employs persistence-ensuring techniques to prevent users from recovering their browsers.
What is more, this rogue extension likely spies on users' browsing activity. Browser-hijacking software usually collects the following information: visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, log-in credentials, personally identifiable details, finance-related data, etc. The collected information can be shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of software like Hockey Start on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples
We have inspected countless browser hijackers; Capital Buff, Games Day, Art Tab, Racing Cars Tab, World Clock Tab – are merely some examples.
This software usually appears legitimate and harmless. Users are lured into download/installation with promises of "handy" functionalities. However, these functions seldom work as advertised, and in most cases – they do not work at all. Even if a browser hijacker operates as indicated by its promotional material – that is not proof of either legitimacy or safety.
How did Hockey Start install on my computer?
We acquired Hockey Start from its "official" promotional page. Browser hijackers are also pushed through scam websites. Most users enter such sites via redirects caused by webpages using rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware.
Additionally, browser-hijacking software can be bundled (packed together) with regular programs. Download from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., skipped steps, used "Easy/Quick" settings, etc.) – increase the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements proliferate browser hijackers as well. Once clicked on, some of the adverts can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user consent.
How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified channels. It is just as important to approach installation with caution. Hence, it is crucial to read terms, study possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt out of all supplements.
Another recommendation is to be vigilant when browsing since fake and malicious content usually appears legitimate. For example, intrusive ads may look harmless yet redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.).
In case of encounters with such advertisements/redirects, check the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Hockey Start, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
