How to remove EazyBit adware and the advertisements it displays
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is EazyBit?
While checking out new submissions to VirusTotal, our research team discovered the EazyBit rogue application. After inspecting it, we determined that this piece of software operates as adware. We also learned that EazyBit is part of the AdLoad malware family.
EazyBit adware overview
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It is designed to run intrusive advertisement campaigns, i.e., display ads on various interfaces. The delivered adverts promote online scams, dubious/harmful software, and even malware. Some intrusive ads are capable of stealthily downloading/installing content when clicked on.
It must be mentioned that any legitimate products encountered through these advertisements are highly unlikely to be endorsed by their developers. Instead, this promotion is undertaken by scammers who abuse affiliate programs in order to acquire illegitimate commissions.
Furthermore, even if adware does not display adverts – the presence of this software on a system endangers device and user safety.
EazyBit might have browser hijacker features, as they are common to AdLoad apps. However, we did not observe such traits during testing.
EazyBit may also have data-tracking abilities. Advertising-supported software usually collects the following information: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, personally identifiable details, account log-in credentials, credit card numbers, etc. The gathered data can be monetized through sale to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
To summarize, the presence of software like EazyBit on devices can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

Adware examples
We have analyzed countless adware samples; DefaultFormat, DefaultFormat, StackMist – are just a couple of our latest finds. Advertising-supported software usually appears ordinary and useful. However, it rarely operates as indicated by its promotional material. Even if adware works as promised – it does not mean that it is legitimate or safe.
How did EazyBit install on my computer?
"Bundling" – packing regular program installation setups with unwanted/malicious supplements – is used to distribute adware. Downloading from dubious channels (e.g., freeware and third-party websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushing through installation processes (e.g., using "Easy/Express" settings, etc.) – increase the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Adware can also have "official" download webpages, and it is endorsed on scam sites. Most users access such websites via redirects caused by pages using rogue advertising networks, misspelled URLs, intrusive ads, spam browser notifications, or installed adware (with browser force-opening abilities).
Intrusive advertisements proliferate advertising-supported software as well. Once clicked on, some intrusive adverts can execute scripts to perform downloads/installations without user permission.
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it from official/verified channels. When installing, it is important to read terms, explore available options, and use the "Custom/Advanced" setting to opt-out of additional apps, extensions, tools, features, etc.
Another recommendation is to be vigilant while browsing since illegitimate and malicious content usually appears ordinary and innocuous. For example, intrusive ads may look legitimate yet redirect to highly questionable sites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you keep encountering such advertisements/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with EazyBit, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.

Yes, Combo Cleaner is capable of scanning computers and eliminating detected adware-type applications. However, it must be mentioned that manual removal (unaided by security programs) might not be an ideal solution.
