What is "FIFA Crypto Giveaway"?
While inspecting sites that use rogue advertising networks, our research team discovered the "FIFA Crypto Giveaway" scam. It is presented as a giveaway held by FIFA, in which users are to contribute a certain amount of either Bitcoin (BTC) or Ethereum (ETH) cryptocurrency to the "event" and immediately receive twice their contribution back.
Naturally, victims of this scam will get nothing in return, and they will only lose the sum they have transferred. It must be emphasized that FIFA is in no way associated with this scheme.
"FIFA Crypto Giveaway" scam overview
The "FIFA Crypto Giveaway" scam appears to be competently made and masquerades as a cryptocurrency mass-adoption event held by FIFA; it even features a photograph of the association's current president Gianni Infantino. As mentioned in the introduction, this scheme is not associated with FIFA or any other legitimate entity.
This scam states that one hundred million USD in cryptocurrency will be distributed to the giveaway's participants. The scheme claims that users will receive twice the amount of cryptocurrency they contribute. The contributions can range from 0.1 to 30 BTC and from 0.5 to 500 ETH.
At the time of writing, these sums are worth approximately 1,600 to 400,000 USD and 500 to 500,000 USD, respectively (note that exchange rates constantly fluctuate, and the conversation may no longer be accurate). Whatever the amount within these specifications that the user transfers - will allegedly result in them receiving twice the return (i.e., 0.2 to 60 BTC or 1 to 1,000 ETH).
However, the claims made by this scam are false, and users will lose everything that they transfer to the provided cryptowallet addresses. Furthermore, since cryptocurrency transactions are virtually untraceable - victims of this scam will be unable to recover their funds.
