What is Dood Colors?

While inspecting suspect software-promoting websites, our research team found the Dood Colors browser extension. After analyzing Dood Colors, we determined that it operates as advertising-supported software (adware) instead.

Dood Colors adware asking for permissions

Dood Colors adware overview

Adware enables the placement of advertisements on visited websites and/or other interfaces. The ads endorse online scams, unreliable/hazardous webpages and apps, and even malware. Some intrusive adverts can be triggered (by being clicked) to perform downloads/installations without user permission.

It is pertinent to mention that while legitimate products can be encountered via these advertisements, they are unlikely to be promoted by their actual developers. Instead, this endorsement is undertaken by scammers abusing the products' affiliate programs to acquire illegitimate commissions.

Advertising-supported software might not deliver advertisements if certain conditions are unsuitable (e.g., incompatible browser/system or user geolocation, particular sites not visited, etc.). However, regardless of whether Dood Colors displays adverts - its presence on a system endangers device/user safety.

What is more, Dood Colors has data tracking functionalities. Targeted information can include: visited URLs, viewed webpages, searched queries, usernames/passwords, personally identifiable details, financial/banking data, etc. The gathered information can be monetized through sale to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).

In summary, the presence of software like Dood Colors on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples

Some-Light, NonLight, Mix Colors, ClickDark, and Gallery are merely some examples of adware that we have analyzed recently.

This software typically appears ordinary and innocuous. Users are lured into download/installation and/or purchase with promises of various functionalities. However, these features seldom work as advertised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.

How did Dood Colors install on my computer?

We obtained Dood Colors from a dubious download webpage. In addition to such pages, adware is promoted on scam sites. Most users either websites that push this software via redirects caused by mistyped URLs, pages using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).

Additionally, advertising-supported software can be bundled (packed together) with ordinary programs. Download from untrustworthy sources (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.

Intrusive adverts spread adware as well. Once clicked on, some of the advertisements can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.

How to avoid installation of adware?

We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it from official/verified channels. When installing, it is important to read terms, study possible options, and use the "Custom/Advanced" settings to opt-out of all additional apps, extensions, tools, features, etc.

We advise being vigilant when browsing since fraudulent and malicious content usually appears legitimate. For example, intrusive advertisements look harmless yet redirect to highly questionable websites (e.g., gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).

In case of encounters with such advertisements/redirects, check the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Dood Colors, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
