How to remove EfficientRecord adware from the operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is EfficientRecord?
EfficientRecord is a rogue application that our research team discovered while inspecting new submissions to VirusTotal. After analyzing this app, we determined that it operates as advertising-supported software (adware) and belongs to the AdLoad malware family.
EfficientRecord adware overview
Adware is designed to display advertisements on visited websites and/or other interfaces. These ads promote untrustworthy/harmful sites and software, online scams, and even malware. Once clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.
It is noteworthy that any legitimate products encountered through these advertisements are unlikely to be promoted by their developers. Instead, this endorsement is undertaken by scammers abusing the products' affiliate programs to obtain illegitimate commissions.
It is pertinent to mention that advertising-supported software may require specific conditions (e.g., compatible browser/system, visits to particular websites, etc.) to run intrusive advertisement campaigns. However, whether EfficientRecord delivers ads is irrelevant as its presence on a system endangers device and user safety regardless.
Furthermore, EfficientRecord may have browser hijacker qualities since they are typical for AdLoad adware - although it did not exhibit any during testing.
What is more, this application likely has data tracking functionalities. Information of interest can include: browsing and search engine histories, personally identifiable details, usernames/passwords, credit card numbers, etc. The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of software like EfficientRecord on devices can lead to system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Adware examples
We have analyzed thousands of adware samples; DynamicLush, GenesisMass, AssetFrame, and UnlimitedPixel are merely some examples of our newest finds. Advertising-supported software usually appears legitimate and harmless. Users are enticed into download/installation with promises of "handy" functionalities, yet they seldom work as advertised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.
How did EfficientRecord install on my computer?
"Bundling" - packing regular program installers with unwanted/malicious supplements - is used to spread adware. Download from dubious sources (e.g., freeware and third-party sites, P2P sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations (e.g., skipped steps and sections, etc.) increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.
Additionally, fake Adobe Flash Player updaters/installers are used in distribution. Intrusive advertisements proliferate advertising-supported software as well. Once clicked on, some of these adverts can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user permission.
Adware is also promoted through its "official" download webpages and scam websites. Most users enter such sites via redirects caused by mistyped URLs, pages using rogue advertising networks, spam browser notifications, intrusive ads, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly advise researching software and downloading only from official and verified sources. It is just as important to exercise caution when installing, e.g., by reading terms, studying possible options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting-out of all additions.
We also recommend being vigilant when browsing - since illegitimate and malicious content typically looks innocuous. For example, intrusive adverts appear ordinary/harmless yet redirect to questionable websites (e.g., pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.).
If you experience such advertisements/redirects, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with EfficientRecord, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What harm can adware cause?
Adware can diminish the browsing experience and system performance. This software usually has data tracking abilities, which make it a threat to user privacy. What is more, adware-displayed advertisements can be deceptive/malicious and cause serious issues (e.g., system infections, financial losses, etc.).
What does adware do?
Adware is designed to run intrusive advertisement campaigns. In other words, it can display advertisements on visited websites and/or different interfaces. Additionally, some types of this software can force-open sites and gather private information.
How do adware developers generate revenue?
Adware generates most of the profit through affiliate programs by promoting various websites, software, products, services, and so forth. The developers might earn commission from ad clicks, site visits, file downloads, product purchases, service subscriptions, or similar.
Will Combo Cleaner remove EfficientRecord adware?
Yes, Combo Cleaner can scan devices and eliminate installed adware-type applications. It is noteworthy that manual removal (unaided by security programs) may be ineffective. In some instances, even after the software itself has been (manually) removed - various file leftovers get left behind. Furthermore, these remnants can continue running and causing issues. Therefore, it is essential to eliminate adware thoroughly.
