Removing MultiDetail adware from the operating system
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MultiDetail?
MultiDetail is a rogue application that our research team discovered while inspecting new submissions to VirusTotal. After analyzing this piece of software, we determined that it is an adware belonging to the AdLoad malware family.
MultiDetail adware overview
Whether adware delivers intrusive advertisement campaigns may depend on certain factors, e.g., compatible browser/device specs, visits to particular websites, etc. However, regardless of whether this software displays ads or not - its presence on a system endangers device integrity and user safety.
Following successful installation onto our test system, MultiDetail began delivering advertisements. Adverts of this type promote a wide variety of unreliable/harmful websites and software, online scams, and even malware. Some intrusive ads can even be triggered (by being clicked) to stealthily download/install software.
It is pertinent to mention that while reputable developers are exceedingly unlikely to use this advertising method, their products may still be encountered through these advertisements. This promotion is typically undertaken by scammers who abuse affiliate programs to acquire illegitimate commissions.
While MultiDetail did not display any browser hijacker qualities during testing, it may have them as they are common to AdLoad adware.
Furthermore, advertising-supported software usually collects private data, and this may apply to MultiDetail. Information of interest includes - browsing activity, personally identifiable details, usernames/passwords, finance-related data, and so on. The gathered data is then shared with and/or sold to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of MultiDetail or similar software on devices - can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial losses, and identity theft.

How did MultiDetail install on my computer?
Adware is distributed using various deceptive and questionable techniques. It can be bundled with ordinary programs. Download from untrustworthy channels (e.g., unofficial and freeware websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc.) and rushed installations - increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive adverts are also used to proliferate advertising-supported software. Once clicked on, some of these ads can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user permission.
Additionally, adware may have "official" promotional pages or be promoted on misleading download sites. Most users access such webpages through mistyped URLs or redirects caused by spam browser notifications, intrusive advertisements, sites that use rogue advertising networks, or installed adware (with browser force-opening capabilities).
How to avoid installation of adware?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading it from official/verified sources. When installing, we advise reading terms, studying possible options, using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings, and opting-out of all supplements.
Another recommendation is to be vigilant when browsing - since illegitimate and malicious content tends to look harmless. For example, intrusive ads appear innocuous - however, they redirect to unreliable and questionable webpages (e.g., pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.).
If you encounter such adverts/redirects, inspect the device and immediately remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with MultiDetail, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What harm can adware cause?
Adware can diminish the browsing experience and decrease system performance. This software typically has data tracking abilities, thereby making it a privacy threat. Adware-displayed advertisements can be deceptive/malicious and cause severe problems (e.g., system infections, financial losses, etc.).
What does adware do?
Adware stands for advertising-supported software. It operates by enabling the placement of third-party graphical content (i.e., ads) on visited websites and/or different interfaces.
How do adware developers generate revenue?
Adware developers profit primarily via affiliate programs by endorsing various sites, products, software, services, and similar.
Will Combo Cleaner remove MultiDetail adware?
Yes, Combo Cleaner is designed to scan systems and eliminate detected threats, including adware-type applications. On the other hand, manual removal (unaided by security software) might not be an ideal solution. Despite the adware itself being (manually) removed - in some cases - various file leftovers remain hidden in the system. Furthermore, such components may continue running and causing issues. Hence, it is crucial to remove adware thoroughly.
