Removing Quick Tag browser hijacker and quicknewtab.com redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Quick Tag?
Quick Tag is a rogue browser extension, which our research team has determined to be a browser hijacker. This piece of dubious software modifies browsers to promote the quicknewtab.com fake search engine.
Quick Tag browser hijacker overview
Once installed onto our test machine, we observed Quick Tag assigning quicknewtab.com as the browsers' homepage, default search engine, and new tab/window URLs. Hence, when we opened new browser tabs/windows and entered search queries into the URL bar - they redirected to quicknewtab.com.
Fraudulent search engines typically cannot generate search results and redirect to genuine ones. Where quicknewtab.com redirects to depends on the user's geolocation. We have observed this search causing the following redirects: to Google (google.com) and via my-search.com and trafficjunction.com to Bing (bing.com). However, other redirect chains are possible.
Furthermore, Quick Tag uses persistence-ensuring methods to prevent browser recovery. Quick Tag also has data tracking abilities, typical for browser hijackers. Information of interest may include: URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, personally identifiable details, and so forth. Browser hijacker developers monetize the gathered data by sharing it with and/or selling it to third-parties.
In summary, the presence of software like Quick Tag on devices can lead to severe privacy issues, financial losses, and even identity theft.

Browser hijacker examples
Best-CouponSearch, Search-Power, and Nuhtab are a few examples of the browser hijackers we have researched. They look legitimate and offer "useful" functionalities (e.g., improved browsing experience, easy access to online content, etc.). However, these functions seldom work as advertised, and in most cases - they do not work at all.
How did Quick Tag install on my computer?
Our researchers discovered Quick Tag when inspecting spam browser notifications, which redirected them to this browser hijacker's download page.
There are many ways to inadvertently access such webpages, e.g., via mistyped URLs or redirects caused by deceptive notifications, sites using rogue advertising networks, intrusive ads, or adware capable of force-opening websites.
Software bundling - packing program installers with unwanted/malicious additions - is used to spread browser hijackers as well. Download from untrustworthy channels and rushed installations - increase the risk of allowing bundled content into the system.
Intrusive advertisements are used to proliferate adware as well. Once clicked on, the adverts can execute scripts to make downloads/installations without user consent.
How to avoid installation of browser hijackers?
We strongly recommend researching software and downloading only from official/verified sources. Dubious download channels, e.g., freeware and third-party websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks, etc. - commonly offer bundled/harmful content.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, explore available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opt-out of all additions.
We also advise exercising caution when browsing, as fraudulent and malicious material typically looks legitimate. For example, intrusive ads appear harmless yet redirect to various questionable sites (e.g., pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.).
If you encounter such adverts/redirects, inspect your system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with Quick Tag, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.

Will Combo Cleaner help me remove Quick Tag browser hijacker?
Yes, Combo Cleaner will scan your computer and eliminate installed browser-hijacking apps. It is worth mentioning that manual removal (i.e., without the aid of security software) can be ineffective with multiple browser hijackers present. Therefore, browser hijackers must be eliminated thoroughly and all at once.
