How to eliminate the one dark browser hijacker

Also Known As: yesjis.com redirect
Damage level: Medium

What kind of application is one dark?

We have discovered the one dark application while inspecting browser notifications delivered by various questionable websites. Once we installed one dark, it hijacked a web browser by changing its settings. We have learned that one dark is a browser hijacker designed to promote yesjis.com - a fake search engine.

yesjis.com browser hijacker

one dark browser hijacker in detail

Our team has noticed that one dark browser hijacker sets yesjis.com as the default search engine, homepage, and new tab page. At the time of the research, yesjis.com showed us search results generated by websearches.club - another shady search engine. We did a repetitive analysis and observed that one dark does not always change settings. In that case, it opens yesjis.com only when a search query is entered into the URL bar.

Typically, fake search engines show results generated by other (legitimate or untrustworthy) engines or generate misleading results. A big part of browser hijackers keeps their settings unchangeable while they are present. Thus, users cannot stop browser hijackers from opening specific addresses without removing them.

Browser hijackers in general

Usually, browser-hijacking applications are promoted as useful apps (one dark is promoted as an extension that provides dark mode for web browsers). Apps of this type (and fake search engines) can be used to collect information about their users. More examples of browser hijackers are Duty-Search, PremiumSearch, Easy-Search.

How did one dark install on my computer?

The installer for one dark browser hijacker is promoted on a deceptive website offering to update the installed extension. That website is promoted through notifications delivered by questionable websites. Also, this app could be distributed through downloaders and installers for other programs.

When programs are bundled with browser hijackers, their downloaders and (or) installers have settings that can be used to deselect optional downloads and (or) installations. Browsers get hijacked when users download and (or) install programs without changing "Custom", "Advanced", or similar settings.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Do not trust shady websites offering to download files/programs. Always use official websites and direct links as sources for downloading them. Check downloaders and installers for optional downloads or installations and deselect them before downloading or installing software.

Also, do not trust advertisements appearing on shady websites - clicking on them can result in opening malicious pages or downloading/installing unwanted apps. If your computer is already infected with one dark, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
