How to remove ExtendedService adware from the operating system?

Also Known As: Ads by ExtendedService adware
Type: Mac Virus
Damage level: Medium

What is ExtendedService adware?

ExtendedService is an untrustworthy adware-type application designed to display annoying advertisements and hijack browsers. Possibly, ExtendedService is designed to track browsing activity or collect other information as well. In most cases, users do not exactly know how they have downloaded and installed apps of this type.

ExtendedService adware

ExtendedService adware in detail

Typically, adware displays pop-up ads, coupons, banners, surveys, and other unwanted advertisements. Ads displayed by ExtendedService are likely to be designed to open questionable pages. Moreover, ads coming from this app may be designed to download (or even install) unwanted applications by running certain scripts.

It is important to mention that advertisements generated by apps like ExtendedService can open pages similar to "Error Code: #2c522hq8wwj791", "Receive iPhone 12", "Apple Platform Security", and other pages designed to trick visitors into installing potentially malicious software and (or) providing personal information (like credit card details).

Another detail about ExtendedService is that it changes the web browser's settings, such as the address of a default search engine, homepage, and new tab to an address of a fake search engine. This application forces users to browse the web with a fake search engine and does not allow to remove its address from settings while it is installed.

It is worth mentioning that fake search engines can show results generated by Yahoo, Google, Bing, or other legitimate search engines. However, they can show results containing links to untrustworthy websites as well. Either way, it is strongly recommended not to use fake search engines or trust apps designed to promote them.

One more reason not to trust ExtendedService is that it may be designed to collect IP addresses, entered search queries, geolocations, visited websites, or other data related to browsing activities. Moreover, it may be capable of gathering sensitive information like usernames and passwords, credit card details, and other data.

ExtendedService in general

ExtendedService generates revenue for its developer by displaying advertisements and promoting a fake search engine that may be designed to promote various untrustworthy websites. There is not a single reason to have this app installed and more than one reason to uninstall it if it is already installed. This app is useless and may cause various problems.

There are lots of applications like ExtendedService. Some examples are ActiveFormat, TechGrid, and UnitCache. It is worth mentioning that adware-type apps and browser hijackers are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) because users rarely download and install them on purpose.

How did ExtendedService install on my computer?

In some cases, users download or install potentially unwanted when they are distributed through deceptive advertisements. More precisely, when users click on ads designed to execute certain scripts. Although, a more significant part of PUAs are distributed using a method called bundling.

When PUAs are distributed using a bundling method, they can be found in downloaders, installers for free programs as extra offers. Users agree to download or install PUAs together with other programs when they do not check and change "Custom", "Advanced", and other similar settings before finishing downloads and installations.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

It is worth remembering that downloaders and installers with settings like "Custom", "Advanced" are likely to be bundled with potentially unwanted applications. Therefore, it is recommended to examine those downloaders and installers and deselect unwanted applications before finishing downloads and installations.

Another way to avoid unwanted downloads and installations is not to download or install programs through unofficial websites, third-party downloaders (or installers), Peer-to-Peer networks (like torrent clients, eMule), and so on. They should be downloaded from official pages and via direct links.

Additionally, it is recommended not to click on advertisements that shady websites (or installed PUAs) display. Those ads might open dubious websites or cause unwanted downloads or installations. Unwanted programs (for example, extensions, add-ons, or plug-ins) installed on a browser or computer should be removed. If your computer is already infected with ExtendedService, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
