How to uninstall the Big Linker application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Big Linker?
Browser hijackers are potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) used to promote fake search engines by changing the settings of web browsers. The Big Linker browser hijacker promotes keysearchs.com in this way and collects browsing histories. It might also access other data.
Apps such as Big Linker fall into the category of PUAs because most users download and install them unintentionally.
Typical browser hijackers change the default search engine, homepage, and new tab to the address of a fake search engine, so that users are forced to visit this site when they open a browser, new tab, or enter search queries into the URL bar. Despite this, research shows that Big Linker can promote keysearchs.com without changing the browser settings.
In cases when it leaves settings unchanged, Big Linker detects when users enter search queries, and then opens keysearchs.com. This site redirects them to bing.com via my-search.com and search-checker.com, or to google.com.
Whether keysearchs.com shows results generated by Bing or Google depends on users' geolocations. Fake search engines can also generate misleading results. They can promote dubious websites (include their addresses in search results) and serve advertisements.
To remove addresses such as keysearchs.com from the settings, users must first uninstall the browser hijacker that promotes it (in this case, Big Linker, but there are other browser hijackers that also promote this address).
Big Linker can read browsing histories, however, it might also read other browsing-related data such as IP addresses, geolocations, and could access sensitive details (e.g., passwords). Data collected by browser hijackers is misused for marketing purposes, sold to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or monetized in other ways.
Therefore, users may become victims of identity theft, encounter privacy breaches, have problems with browsing safety, etc. In order to avoid issues that browser hijackers can cause, do not agree to download or install these apps while downloading/installing other programs.

In summary, browser hijackers are designed only to promote fake search engines (and collect browsing data and other information). Most are advertised as apps that supposedly improve the browsing experience by generating accurate search results or having certain functionality. In fact, no browser hijacker should be installed on operating systems or web browsers.
More examples of apps that are categorized as browser hijackers are PDFSearchWeb, VideoSearchApp, and 4KSportSearchs.
How did Big Linker install on my computer?
People often download and install unwanted apps inadvertently via deceptive advertisements - they click ads that cause unwanted download/installations by executing certain scripts.
Unwanted downloads and installations also occur during download/installation of other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the set-ups as 'extra offers'. This PUA distribution method of PUAs is called "bundling".
Typically, offers to download and install these additional apps can be declined via "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or by unticking certain checkboxes within the set-ups. When users download and install programs without making these checks and changes, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on.
Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others). If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately.
Installed programs must be activated and updated with tools or implemented functions that are provided by the official developers. No other third party, unofficial tools should be used.
Note that it is illegal to activate licensed software with ‘cracking’ tools. Files and programs should be downloaded from official websites and via direct download links. Avoid third party installers and the tools/sources mentioned above.
Do not open website links or files in irrelevant emails that are received from unknown, suspicious addresses. These bogus emails are often disguised as official and important. Regularly, scan your computer with reputable, up-to-date antivirus or anti-spyware software.
If your computer is already infected with Big Linker, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
