How to remove the SubVideoTube unwanted application
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is SubVideoTube?
Developers of apps such as SubVideoTube use deceptive tactics to distribute their apps. Users often download and install them inadvertently and, therefore, they are classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
It is likely that the installer for SubVideoTube comes bundled with adware, a browser hijacker, or other PUAs. Therefore, SubVideoTube and other PUAs installed on browsers or operating systems should be removed immediately.
There is a high probability that the main purpose of SubVideoTube's installer is not to distribute SubVideoTube but some advertising-supported software, a browser hijacker or other unwanted software.
Adware should never be installed on browsers or computers. Apps of this type generate revenue for the developers by serving banners, surveys, coupons, pop-ups, and other advertisements. These can promote dubious websites or distribute PUAs: if clicked, they can open untrusted pages or run scripts designed to download or install unwanted software.
Furthermore, adware can gather IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, URLs of visited web pages, entered search queries, geolocations, and other data relating to internet browsing activities. Adware might be capable of reading passwords, credit card details, and other personal sensitive information.
The installer for SubVideoTube could be used to distribute a browser hijacker as well. These apps promote fake search engines changing browser settings such as the address of the default search engine, homepage, and new tab. They change them to a specific address, which users are forced to visit when they open a browser (new window), new tab and enter search queries into the URL bar, and use it to search.
Typically, fake search engines show results generated by Yahoo, Google, Bing, and other legitimate search engines. They also promote dubious websites, show ads, etc. Usually, people cannot revert to the previous settings unless they uninstall the browser hijacker.

There are many installers bundled with PUAs. Some examples are the installers for FlashPVideo and FPVideo. These installers are designed to appear like the installers for Adobe Flash Player.
PUAs are used only to generate revenue for the developers. I.e., most are useless to regular users. They can collect sensitive information when installed on browsers/computers, and users might become victims of identity theft, lose access to personal accounts, suffer monetary loss, etc.
How did SubVideoTube install on my computer?
It likely that the installer for SubVideoTube is advertised on a deceptive website (e.g., a website that uses scare tactics to trick visitors into installing unnecessary, potentially malicious software).
PUAs are distributed via download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing tactic of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and settings, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertently allowing bundled content into the system.
Some PUAs have "official" download sites. Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download software and files from official websites and via direct links. It is not safe to use torrent clients, eMule (or other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, unofficial websites or other sources of this kind.
Avoid third party installers. Check "Advanced", "Custom" and other settings, and decline offers to download or install unwanted software. Do not click ads that are displayed on dubious websites, since they can open other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins) that are installed on the browser. The same should be applied to programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system.
Regularly scan your computer with reputable antivirus or anti-spyware software and keep this software up to date.
If your computer is already infected with SubVideoTube, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
