How to remove the Funcy Web browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Funcy Web?
Funcy Web is classified as a browser hijacker because it promotes a fake search engine (quicknewtab.com) and directs users to it without their permission. It also collects browsing history details and possibly other data.
Note that browser hijackers such as Funcy Web are not often installed by users intentionally and, for this reason, they are also classified as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
In most cases, browser hijackers promote fake search engine addresses by changing browser settings such as the homepage, new tab and default search engine, however, this particular app does not actually assign them to quicknewtab.com - it opens this site only when users enter search queries into URL bar.
Note that quicknewtab.com is classified as a fake search engine because it simply redirects to google.com or bing.com (via my-search.com and search-checker.com). I.e., it displays results generated by Google or Bing (depending on users' geolocations).
Typically, addresses of fake search engines can be removed from browser settings only when the browser hijackers that promote them are no longer installed on the browsers.
Furthermore, browser hijackers often collect browsing data (e.g., addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, IP addresses, and geolocations), and even personal data. The data could be sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or monetized in other ways.
Therefore, users of apps such as Funcy Web are at risk of problems relating to browsing safety, privacy, and even identity theft.

Browser Extension(s) | Funcy Web |
Supposed Functionality | Improved browsing experience |
Promoted URL | quicknewtab.com |
Serving IP Address (quicknewtab.com) | 172.67.150.185 |
Affected Browser Settings | Homepage, new tab URL, default search engine |
Symptoms | Manipulated Internet browser settings (homepage, default Internet search engine, new tab settings). Users are forced to visit the hijacker's website and search the Internet using their search engines. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake Flash Player installers. |
Damage | Internet browser tracking (potential privacy issues), display of unwanted ads, redirects to dubious websites. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
In summary, apps such as Funcy Web change browser settings/promote a fake search engine and collect data. They are useless to regular users (even if advertised as useful) and designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
More examples of apps similar to Funcy Web are PDFSearchApps, Stream Tube, and StreamsSearchWeb.
How did Funcy Web install on my computer?
Users sometimes inadvertently download and install unwanted apps via deceptive advertisements - they click ads that cause unwanted download/installations by executing certain scripts.
Unwanted downloads and installations also occur during download/installation of other programs. I.e., when PUAs are included into the set-ups as 'extra offers'. This PUA distribution method of PUAs is called "bundling".
Typically, offers to download and install these additional apps can be declined via "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, or by unticking certain checkboxes within the set-ups. When users download and install programs without making these checks and changes, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised not to use Peer-to-Peer networks (such as eMule, torrent clients, etc.), unofficial websites, third party downloaders, installers, etc. to download or install software or files. Use official pages and direct links.
Check download/installation set-ups for settings such as "Advanced", "Manual, or "Custom" (or include certain checkboxes) and decline offers to download or install unwanted apps before completing the process.
Additionally, do not trust or click advertisements that are displayed on dubious web pages - they can open other rogue sites or cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any suspicious or unknown extensions, add-ons and plug-ins installed on the browser. The same applies to software of this kind that is installed on the operating system.
If your computer is already infected with Funcy Web, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
