How to stop redirects to and from rex-news.org
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is rex-news[.]org site?
Sharing similarities with samizdat-philosophy.com, revoluciondron.com, houstontexansteamstore.com and countless others, rex-news[.]org is a rogue website. This web page operates by presenting visitors with dubious content and/or redirecting them to other similarly untrusted or possibly malicious sites.
Few users enter rex-news[.]org intentionally - most are redirected to it by intrusive ads or by Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already installed on their devices. This software does not require explicit user permission to infiltrate systems. PUAs cause redirects, deliver intrusive ad campaigns and collect browsing-related data.
The behavior of rex-news[.]org is determined by visitors' geolocations. The web page learns this information by checking their IP (Internet Protocol) addresses. Therefore, whether visitors are redirected elsewhere and/or are presented with dubious material depends on their geolocations.
Most rogue websites use deceptive techniques to trick visitors into enabling browser notifications, and rex-news[.]org is no exception. In the case of this page, the consent option to the notifications is 'disguised' as a captcha verification: "Click Allow to confirm / I am not a robot / Click 'Allow' to verify that you are not a robot".
Should the notifications be enabled, rex-news[.]org starts running intrusive ad campaigns. The delivered ads are more than just a nuisance, they are also dangerous. When clicked, intrusive advertisements can redirect to various untrusted/malicious websites and some can even stealthily download/install software.
PUAs are a prime example of content infiltrated into systems in this fashion. These unwanted applications can have varied dangerous capabilities and the functionality can be in different combinations. For example, they can force-open harmful sites and/or deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns.
Furthermore, most PUAs can track data. They monitor browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed pages, searched queries, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is then shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
In summary, the presence of unwanted software on devices can result in system infections, serious privacy issues, financial loss and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

PUAs usually seem legitimate and useful. They also offer a broad range of functionality, however, despite how good the advertised features may sound, they are rarely operational. The sole purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue for the developers.
Regular users receive no genuine value and can instead experience serious problems. PUAs cause redirects, deliver intrusive ad campaigns and collect private data.
How did adware install on my computer?
Unwanted downloads and installations often occur when developers distribute PUAs by integrating them into the download/installation setups of other programs as "extra offers". This distribution method is known as "bundling". The offers can be declined in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the setups (or by unticking certain checkboxes).
Many users fail to check and change these settings (or untick the checkboxes), thereby allowing PUAs to infiltrate together with the desired software. PUAs are also downloaded and installed by clicking deceptive advertisements (usually on untrusted sites) that execute certain scripts.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation. Use only official and verified download channels. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule), and other third party downloaders commonly offer harmful and bundled content, and are therefore untrusted and should be avoided.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious and malicious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and many others).
If you encounter ads or redirects of this kind, inspect the system and remove all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
