How to remove the Eco Search browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Eco Search?
Eco Search is rogue software categorized as a browser hijacker. It operates by making changes to browser settings to promote ecosearch.club (a fake search engine). This browser hijacker also monitors users' browsing activity. Due to the dubious methods used to proliferate Eco Search, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other popular browsers are popular targets of browser hijackers. They operate by assigning the addresses of fake search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. Eco Search makes these modifications to promote ecosearch.club as well.
Therefore, with Eco Search installed, each new browser tab/window opened and web search made via the URL bar redirects to ecosearch.club. Fake search engines are rarely able to provide unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) legitimate sites.
The web searcher promoted by Eco Search is no exception to this, and simply redirects to the Bing (bing.com) search engine. Furthermore, browser hijackers can reset any changes users attempt to make to their browsers, and might restrict/deny access to the settings outright.
Therefore, recovering a hijacked browser is impossible without removing the software affecting it. As mentioned, Eco Search has data tracking capabilities. It can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, paged viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
The collected data is then monetized by browser hijacker developers who share it with and/or sell it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). To summarize, the presence of data-tracking content on devices can result in financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft.
To ensure device integrity and user safety, it is crucial to eliminate all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

Browser hijackers may seem legitimate and harmless. PDFSearchio, RecipeSearch, SearchTheConverter, and Appnewtab are some examples of software within this category. Users are often enticed into download/installation with offers of "useful" functionality, however, the features seldom work as advertised and, in most cases, do not work at all.
In fact, this applies to most PUAs. The sole purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather private information.
How did Eco Search install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed via the download/installation set-ups of other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
By rushing through download/installation processes (e.g. skipping steps and sections, using pre-set "Quick/Express" options, etc.), many users risk unintentionally allowing bundled content into their devices. Some PUAs have "official" download web pages.
Intrusive advertisements proliferate these applications as well. Once clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all products prior to download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from the official and verified sources. Untrusted download channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, you are advised to read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, and so on. Intrusive ads may seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, etc.).
If you encounter these ads or redirects, inspect the system and remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately. If your computer is already infected with Eco Search, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
