How to remove the MyWeatherFree browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is MyWeatherFree?
MyWeatherFree is rogue software endorsed as a tool for quick access to weather-related content such as local and national forecasts, weather maps and world news on the subject. Following successful infiltration, MyWeatherFree makes modifications to browser settings to promote softsquare.net and, therefore, it is classified as a browser hijacker.
Furthermore, most browser hijackers monitor users' browsing activity. Since people often install MyWeatherFree inadvertently, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and other browsers with large user bases are common targets of browser hijackers. They operate by assigning the addresses of bogus search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs.
MyWeatherFree makes such alterations to browser settings to promote softsquare.net. Therefore, with this app installed, each new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar redirects to softsquare.net.
Fake search engines are seldom able to generate unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) legitimate sites - softsquare.net is no exception to this, and simply redirects to Google (google.com).
In addition to experiencing these redirects, users may also find that recovering their browsers is not an easy process, since browser hijackers can restrict/deny access to the browser settings and/or undo any permitted changes made. Therefore, recovery is only possible by eliminating the browser hijacker.
Furthermore, software within this classification typically has data tracking capabilities, and it is highly likely that this is the case with MyWeatherFree. Browser hijackers can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information derived from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
The gathered data is often shared with and/or sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). Therefore, the presence of data-tracking software on browsers/systems can lead to system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft.
To ensure device integrity and user safety, all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed without delay.

Online Radio Finder Tab, Web Protection For Chrome and Watch TV Quick are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem legitimate and harmless, and users are enticed into download/installation with offers of various "useful" functionality, however, the advertised features are rarely operational.
This applies to most PUAs. The only purpose of this unwanted software is to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs hijack browsers, cause redirects, run intrusive advertisement campaigns and collect private data.
How did MyWeatherFree install on my computer?
Some PUAs (including MyWeatherFree) have "official" download web pages. These apps are often downloaded/installed with other products. This deceptive marketing technique of packing regular software with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertent installation of bundled content. Intrusive ads proliferate PUAs as well. When clicked, they can execute scripts to make stealthy downloads/installations.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software before download/installation and/or purchase. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Untrusted channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive or bundled content.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, explore all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of additional apps, tools, features, etc. Intrusive ads may seem legitimate, however, they can redirect to dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and so on).
If you encounter ads/redirects of this kind, inspect your devices and immediately remove all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with MyWeatherFree, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
