How to uninstall NetProgress adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is NetProgress?
NetProgress is a potentially unwanted application (PUA) which functions both as adware and a browser hijacker: it is designed to serve advertisements and promote a fake search engine (0yrvtrh.com) by changing certain browser settings. It is likely that NetProgress also functions as a data tracking tool.
Apps of this type are categorized as PUAs, since in most cases users download and install them unintentionally.
When adware such as NetProgress is installed on the browser and/or operating system, it displays various advertisements such as banners, coupons, surveys, pop-up ads, etc. Commonly, these ads open dubious, potentially malicious websites or even execute scripts designed to cause download or installation of PUAs.
Since NetProgress functions as adware and also as a browser hijacker, it changes browser settings. Typically, browser hijackers change the address of the homepage, default search engine and new tab to the address of a fake search engine (in this case, 0yrvtrh.com).
Therefore, users are forced to visit a certain address when they open a browser, new tab or enter search queries into the URL bar. Usually, any changes that were made by a browser hijacker can be undone only when it is no longer installed. NetProgress might also collect various data.
In most cases, these apps gather browsing data (e.g., IP addresses, addresses of visited web pages, entered search queries, geolocations), however, in some cases they are capable of accessing personal, sensitive information.
Furthermore, the developers could misuse collected information to generate revenue by selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) or in other ways.

There is a great number of apps like NetProgress, for example, ConnectedAnalog, InitiatorField and SectionIndexer. Generally, they generate revenue for the developers by serving advertisements, gathering various data and/or promoting a fake search engine.
Users who have apps of this type installed on the browser and/or operating system could become victims of identity theft, experience issues relating to online privacy, browsing safety and/or other problems. Therefore, NetProgress and other app of this type should not be trusted (downloaded and installed).
How did NetProgress install on my computer?
In some cases, users download and install PUAs such as NetProgress through deceptive ads that, when clicked, execute certain scripts. Mostly, however, people download and install PUAs through set-ups that have PUAs included as 'additional offers'. This PUA distribution method is known as "bundling".
Usually, offers to download and install PUAs can be declined through "Custom", "Advanced" or other settings, however, many users often download and install their software without checking these settings, thereby allowing PUAs to be downloaded and installed.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Programs and files should be downloaded only from official websites and through direct links. Do not use third party downloaders/installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (eMule, torrent clients), dubious websites and other sources/channels of this kind to download or install software - they are often used to promote PUAs or even malicious applications.
Check all settings such as "Custom" and "Advanced" and decline any offers to download or install unwanted software. Do not click intrusive ads that appear on dubious web pages, since they can open potentially malicious pages or cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Remove any unknown, unwanted or suspicious add-ons, plug-ins or extensions that are installed on the browser, and programs of this kind installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with NetProgress, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
