How to remove the StreamItSearch browser hijacker
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is StreamItSearch?
StreamItSearch is a browser hijacker designed to promote streamit-search.com. Following successful infiltration, this piece of software modifies browser settings to promote a fake search engine (streamit-search.com). Furthermore, StreamItSearch has data tracking capabilities that are used to monitor browsing activity.
Since most users download/install StreamItSearch unintentionally, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Browser hijackers primarily target Google Chrome, Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox and other popular browsers. They operate by reassigning the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of bogus search engines.
Therefore, with a browser hijacker installed, each new browser tab/window opened and each search query typed into the URL bar redirects to the address of the bogus search engine. StreamItSearch promotes streamit-search.com in this manner as well.
Fake search engines are typically unable to provide unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) legitimate search engines. The web searcher of StreamItSearch (streamit-search.com) is no exception to this, and simply redirects to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com).
Browser hijackers can restrict or deny access to browser settings and/or undo any permitted changed made. Therefore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the browser hijacker. As mentioned, StreamItSearch can track data.
It can monitor browsing activity (visited URLs, viewed pages, typed search queries, etc.) and gather vulnerable data extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is highly likely to contain personally identifiable information.
Browser hijacker developers monetize this information by sharing it with and/or selling it to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, the presence of data-tracking software on devices can lead to financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft.
To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

SportsHDSearchs, Weather Discover, SMedia and ConverterzSearch are some examples of other browser hijackers. They may seem legitimate and harmless, and users are often enticed into download/installation with offers of various useful functionality, however, the features promised are seldom operational, and this is typical of most PUAs.
The only purpose of these unwanted apps is to generate revenue at users' expense. PUAs modify browsers, force-open untrusted and malicious sites, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns and gather private data.
How did StreamItSearch install on my computer?
Certain PUAs (including StreamItSearch) have "official" promotional web pages from which they can be downloaded. These applications are also proliferated via the download/installation set-ups of other software. This deceptive marketing technique of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling".
Rushing download/installation processes (e.g. skimming or ignoring terms, using pre-set options, skipping steps and sections, etc.) increases the risk of inadvertent installation of bundled content. Once clicked, intrusive ads can execute scripts to download/install PUAs without users' consent.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are strongly advised to research all software before download/installation and/or purchase. Use only official and verified download channels, since untrusted sources such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks (BitTorrent, Gnutella, eMule, etc.) and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content.
When downloading/installing, read the terms, study all available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features, and so on. It is also important to exercise caution when browsing. Intrusive ads may seem normal, however, they can redirect to dubious pages (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating, and others).
If you encounter advertisements and/or redirects of this kind, inspect all devices and immediately remove any dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with StreamItSearch, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
