How to remove ExtendedTask adware from Mac computers
What is ExtendedTask adware?
ExtendedTask is rogue software classified as adware and possessing browser hijacker traits. This application operates by running intrusive advertisement campaigns, making modifications to browser settings and promoting fake search engines. ExtendedTask promotes Safe Finder via akamaihd.net. It is highly likely that this app also monitors users' browsing activity, as this is a common feature of adware and browser hijackers. Due to the dubious techniques used to proliferate ExtendedTask, it is also classified as a Potentially Unwanted Application (PUA).
Adware delivers full-page pop-ups, banners, surveys and other intrusive ads. These significantly affect the browsing experience, as they overlay web pages and limit browsing speed. Once clicked, the advertisements redirect to various dubious and possibly malicious sites. Additionally, some intrusive ads can be triggered (when clicked) to execute scripts designed to download/install rogue software (e.g. PUAs) without users' consent. Browser hijackers assign the addresses of bogus search engines as the homepage, default search engine and new tab/window URLs. Therefore, each new browser tab/window opened and search made via the URL bar redirects to the promoted address. ExtendedTask promotes Safe Finder through akamaihd.net in this manner. Fake web searchers are usually unable to generate unique results, and so they redirect to (or cause redirection chains ending with) Yahoo, Google, Bing and other legitimate search engines. Furthermore, recovering an affected browser is impossible without removing the browser hijacker, since this rogue software can reset any changes users attempt to make, and/or deny access to the browser settings outright. As mentioned, most PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) have data tracking capabilities. They can monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and collect personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The gathered data is often monetized by sharing with and/or selling to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). In summary, the presence of unwanted apps on devices can lead to system infections, financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To ensure device/user safety, all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be eliminated immediately upon detection.

AdjustableValue, PlusAbout, FrequencySignal and ProductiveOperation are some examples of other adware-type apps. They may seem legitimate and useful, and people are often lured into download/installation with offers of a variety of functionality, however, the advertised features are typically nonoperational. In fact, this is true of most PUAs. The only purpose of these unwanted applications is to generate revenue at users' expense. Rather than delivering any real value, PUAs run intrusive advertisement campaigns, modify browsers, cause redirects and gather private information.
How did ExtendedTask install on my computer?
PUAs are distributed through the download/installation set-ups of other software. This deceptive marketing method of packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions is called "bundling". Rushing downloads/installations (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps, using pre-sets, etc.) increases the risk of unintentionally allowing bundled content into the system. Certain PUAs have "official" download sites. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well - when clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are advised to research all software prior to download/installation. All downloads must be done from official and verified sources. Untrusted download channels such as unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer dubious and bundled content. When downloading/installing, it is important to read the terms, study all possible options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out of supplementary apps, tools, features and other additions. Intrusive ads may seem normal and harmless, however, they can redirect to highly dubious web pages (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.). If you encounter advertisements/redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with ExtendedTask, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
