How to remove IdeaReference adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is IdeaReference?
IdeaReference is classified as adware, however, it also operates as a browser hijacker. This app promotes a fake search engine (Safe Finder) by changing browser settings and opening it through akamaihd.net. It also serves advertisements and is capable of reading private, sensitive information.
Commonly, users download and install apps of this type (adware, browser hijackers, etc.) inadvertently and, for this reason, they are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
Applications such as IdeaReference serve intrusive advertisements. For example, banners, coupons, pop-ups, surveys, and so on. Commonly, when users click these ads, they inadvertently open various untrusted websites. Sometimes, the ads can be designed to execute scripts to download and install unwanted, potentially malicious software.
Adware-type applications often gather browsing data. For example, geolocations, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, IP addresses and other details. Research shows that IdeaReference can access sensitive information such as passwords, telephone numbers, credit card details, etc.
This information could be misused to steal personal online accounts, make fraudulent purchases and transactions, steal identities, etc. It might also be sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals).
Therefore, users who have IdeaReference installed on their browser and/or computer could become victims of identity theft, lose access to various accounts, suffer monetary loss, experience issues relating to browsing safety, privacy, and so on.
Additionally, IdeaReference promotes a fake search engine by modifying browser settings such as the address of the homepage, default search engine, and new tab (the app changes these settings to the fake search engine URL). Commonly, browser settings can be restored only when the app that modified them is no longer installed.
Therefore, IdeaReference should never be downloaded or installed. The same applies to all the other apps of this type.

IdeaReference is very similar to InterfaceSample, BasicDesktop and TypicalFraction (and many similar apps). These apps feed users with ads, collect data, and hijack browsers. Typically, they are advertised as useful and legitimate, however, adware is designed only to generate revenue for the developers and can cause serious issues.
As mentioned, these apps are usually downloaded and installed unintentionally.
How did IdeaReference install on my computer?
Browser hijackers, adware and other PUAs are commonly spread using a marketing method called "bundling". I.e., by including the apps into the download/installation set-ups of other software as 'additional offers'. In most cases, offers to download and/or install potentially unwanted apps are listed in "Advanced", "Custom", or other settings.
When users download and install their programs without changing the default settings, they often allow PUAs to infiltrate. These apps are also downloaded and installed through deceptive ads that execute certain scripts when clicked.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Do not download software or files from untrusted, unofficial websites, through torrent clients, eMule (and other Peer-to-Peer networks), third party downloaders, etc. Third party installers should also be avoided. These tools and channels are often used to promote dubious, even malicious files and apps.
Software and files should be downloaded only through direct links and from official websites. Check all "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings, and decline offers to download or install additionally-included unwanted apps. Do not click intrusive ads, since they tend to open untrusted/potentially malicious websites and can cause unwanted downloads and installations.
Commonly, such ads appear on dubious websites, however, they sometimes also appear on legitimate site. Remove any suspicious extensions, add-ons, and plug-ins installed on the browser, and programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system.
If your computer is already infected with IdeaReference, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
