How to stop browsers from force-opening mybestsearch.net
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is mybestsearch.net?
mybestsearch.net is the address of a fake search engine. These bogus tools typically offer improved search results and similar "useful" features. In fact, they are rarely able to provide valid search results or deliver any other value. Fake search engines are usually promoted by Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) called browser hijackers.
As well as promoting useless tools, browser hijackers can track browsing-relating data.
Popular browsers with large user bases, such as Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer are common targets of browser hijackers. Following successful infiltration, they reassign the default search engine, homepage, and new tab/window URLs to the addresses of bogus search engines.
These seemingly minor modifications significantly affect the browsing experience. To elaborate, with a browser hijacker promoting mybestsearch.net installed, each search made via the URL bar and each new browser tab/window opened, redirects to mybestsearch.net.
As mentioned, fake search engines are seldom able to generate valid results, and so they tend to redirect to (or cause redirection chains leading to) legitimate sites - mybestsearch.net is no exception to this, and simply redirects to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com).
Browser hijackers can limit/deny access to browser settings and undo any changes made. Therefore, a hijacked browser can only be recovered by removing the software hijacking it. Most browser hijackers have data tracking capabilities.
They can record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather personal information extracted from it (IP addresses, geolocations and other details). The collected data is often monetized by sharing with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) intent on misusing it for profit.
To summarize, the presence of data-tracking content on systems can lead to financial loss, serious privacy issues and even identity theft. To ensure device integrity and user safety, remove all suspicious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins immediately upon detection.

theappsparty.net and tigerpdf-search.com are some examples of other fake search engines. Much like these bogus tools, browser hijackers (e.g. My Horoscope Tab, Maps N' Direction Hub, Manuals Directory Search and many others) often seem legitimate and offer various functionalities, however, the advertised features are usually nonoperational.
In fact, this is typical of all PUAs. These unwanted apps have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. They have no real value and can instead cause serious issues. PUAs modify browsers, force-open untrusted and malicious websites, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns and collect private information.
How did mybestsearch.net install on my computer?
PUAs are often downloaded/installed with other software. This deceptive marketing method of pre-packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions is termed "bundling". When downloading/installing, ignoring terms, skipping steps, and using pre-set options increases the risk of inadvertent installation of dubious and/or bundled content.
Certain PUAs have "official" download web pages. Intrusive ads proliferate these applications as well - when clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
You are strongly advised to research all products before download/installation or purchase. Perform all downloads from official and verified sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting websites, Peer-to-Peer sharing networks and other third party downloaders commonly offer deceptive and bundled content, and are thus untrusted.
Treat download and installation processes with caution. Read the terms, explore available options, use the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and opt-out of all additional apps, tools, functions, etc. Intrusive ads may seem normal and harmless, however, they redirect to dubious sites (e.g. gambling, pornography, adult-dating and others).
If you encounter advertisements/redirects of this kind, inspect the system and immediately eliminate all suspect applications and browser extensions/plug-ins. If your computer is already infected with browser hijackers, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate it.
