How to remove PanelStyle adware from the operating system?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is PanelStyle?
PanelStyle is a rogue app, categorized as adware. It delivers various intrusive advertisements, which seriously diminish browsing quality. Additionally, PanelStyle possesses browser hijacker traits, e.g. browser modifications and fake search engine promotion.
This application promotes Safe Finder via akamaihd.net. Due to its questionable proliferation methods, PanelStyle is also classified as a PUA (Potentially Unwanted Application). Most PUAs have data tracking abilities, which are employed to spy on users' browsing activity; it is highly likely that PanelStyle has such abilities as well.
PanelStyle enables placement of pop-ups, coupons, surveys, banners and other intrusive adverts on any visited website. Once clicked on, these ads redirect to rogue/untrustworthy, sale-based, compromised, deceptive/scam and malicious sites.
Some intrusive advertisements can even be triggered (by being clicked) to execute scripts, designed to download/install software (e.g. PUAs) without user consent. Browser hijackers (which PanelStyle shares qualities with) operate by assigning the addresses of their fake web searchers as browsers' default search engine, homepage and new tab/window URLs.
Illegitimate search engines have no value to users, as they are usually unable to generate search results, so they redirect to Google, Bing, Yahoo and other genuine ones. With PanelStyle installed, every new browser tab/window opened and search query typed into the URL bar - redirect to akamaihd.net, then to Safe Finder and finally to Yahoo (search.yahoo.com).
Furthermore, any changes made to browsers can be automatically reset, if access to the browser settings is not restricted or denied outright. Hence, to recover the affected browser, it is necessary to remove the browser hijacker.
As mentioned in the introduction, PUAs (adware and browser hijackers included) typically monitor browsing activity (URLs visited, webpages viewed, search queries, etc.) and collect personal information (IP addresses, geolocations and other details).
The gathered data is typically monetized by sharing it with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals), intent on similarly misusing for profit. To summarize, unwanted apps can cause system infiltrations/infections, financial losses, severe privacy issues and even identity theft.
Therefore, to protect device and user safety - all suspicious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

AppliedReview, NationalSpecial, QuestSearch are a couple examples of other adware. Not just adware-types but all unwanted applications tend to look legitimate and useful. Users are tempted into download/installation with offers of various "handy" features.
However, the promised functions are rarely operational. The only purpose of such software is to generate revenue for the developers; user convenience and safety - are irrelevant. PUAs are designed to run intrusive ad campaigns, hijack browsers, cause undesirable redirects and gather private data.
How did PanelStyle install on my computer?
Some PUAs have "official" download websites. However, they are more commonly downloaded/installed together with other software. "Bundling" is the term used to define this deceptive marketing technique of packing regular products with unwanted or malicious additions.
Rushed download and installation processes (e.g. skipped steps and sections, etc.) - increase the risk of inadvertent installation of bundled content, despite presence of any opt-out options. Intrusive advertisements can infiltrate unwanted applications into systems as well. Upon being clicked, they can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
It is recommended to research software before download/installation. All downloads should be done only from official and verified sources. Unofficial and free file-hosting (freeware) sites, P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.) and other third party downloaders - are considered to be untrustworthy; hence, they are advised against use.
When downloading/installing, it is important to read terms, study all available options, use the "Custom/Advanced" settings and opt-out from all supplementary apps, tools, features and other additions. Intrusive adverts usually appear legitimate, ordinary and harmless, but they redirect to various questionable webpages (e.g. gambling, adult-dating, pornography, etc.).
In case of encounters with such ads/redirects, users should inspect the systems and immediately eliminate all dubious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins from it. If your computer is already infected with PanelStyle, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
