How to uninstall PanelStart adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is PanelStart?
PanelStart is a potentially unwanted application (PUA) designed to improve the browsing experience, however, it is categorized as adware, and thus it feeds users with various intrusive advertisements. These applications also gather details relating to users' browsing activities. In most cases, adware and other PUAs are downloaded and installed inadvertently.
Typically, adware such as PanelStart displays advertisements that conceal underlying content of visited websites. When clicked, the ads open dubious, potentially malicious pages or run scripts that cause download/installation of other PUAs. It is possible that they might also cause download/installation of malware.
Examples of ads that adware-type apps display include coupons, surveys, pop-ups, and banners. Furthermore, adware can record browsing data such as addresses of visited web pages, entered search queries, geolocations, IP addresses, and other similar details.
In some cases these apps record private, sensitive information. Adware developers often sell the information to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue in other ways. Apps such as PanelStart can be the reason behind identity theft, issues with browsing safety, privacy, and other problems.
Therefore, remove these apps from the browser and operating system immediately.

Some examples of other apps that are categorized as adware include SystemSpot, CentralRush and ContentStyles. Developers advertise this as useful software that supposedly delivers features, improves the browsing experience, and so on. In fact, few apps of this type operate as advertised.
They simply feed users with intrusive ads and gather information. Furthermore, adware users risk experiencing various problems. Software of this type should never be downloaded or installed.
How did PanelStart install on my computer?
In most cases, people unintentionally download and install PUAs by clicking deceptive ads that execute certain scripts, or by downloading and/or installing programs that have PUAs included in the set-ups.
This latter PUA distribution method is called "bundling" and is used to trick people into downloading and installing unwanted software by including it into the set-ups as "additional offers". In most cases, these offers can be found in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings.
Many people download and install programs without checking or changing these settings, thereby agreeing by default with offers to download and install additionally-included software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Unwanted downloads and installations can be avoided by downloading software only from official websites and via direct links. Various third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), dubious websites, and other similar sources/channels are often used to distribute unwanted software.
Check "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar settings of the download/installation setup and decline offers to download or install additionally-included applications. Do not click intrusive ads that appear on dubious web pages - they can open untrusted or potentially malicious websites or cause download/installation of unwanted software.
Remove all unwanted, suspicious applications (extensions, plug-ins, add-ons) from the browser immediately. Also apply this to software of this kind installed on the operating system. If your computer is already infected with PanelStart, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
