How to stop browsers from causing redirects to secret-video.online
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is secret-video[.]online?
secret-video[.]online is an untrusted website, which loads dubious content or redirects visitors to other pages of this kind. Note that secret-video[.]online is virtually identical to other rogue pages such as cmilg[.]pro, brotherenuryc[.]pro, gubudakis[.]com and many others.
Typically, people do not open these sites intentionally - they are opened through deceptive ads, dubious pages or potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that are installed on browsers and/or operating systems. Most PUAs record information relating to users' browsing habits and serve various advertisements.
After installation, PUAs repeatedly open pages such as secret-video[.]online in new browser windows or tabs. As mentioned, secret-video[.]online loads dubious content or redirects visitors to other (about 2-3) untrusted pages. Typically, pages opened through sites such as secret-video[.]online promote rogue software, contain deceptive ads, and so on.
Like many other rogue sites, secret-video[.]online asks permission to show notifications. It often deceives visitors into allowing it to show notifications using a 'clickbait' technique. I.e., this page asks them to confirm that they are not "robots" by clicking the "Allow" button. By clicking the button, visitors permit secret-video[.]online to show notifications.
In most cases, these web pages show notifications that contain deceptive ads, links to rogue pages and other dubious content. Furthermore, most PUAs collect data relating to users' browsing activity. For example, IP (Internet Protocol) addresses, addresses of visited pages, entered search queries, geolocations, and other browsing data.
Some PUAs record personal, sensitive information as well. The developers sell the data to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue in various ways. Additionally, PUAs can serve advertisements in the form of coupons, surveys, pop-ups, banners, etc.
These redirect people who click them to potentially malicious websites. The ads might also execute scripts to download/install unwanted applications. To avoid identity theft, problems relating to online privacy, web browsing safety, and other issues, we recommend against downloading or installing any PUAs.

Typically, PUAs generate revenue for the developers by collecting information, serving intrusive ads and forcing people to visit dubious websites. PUAs are often advertised as useful and legitimate, however, most deliver no useful features or any other value. They simply cause problems. Note that people often download and install PUAs inadvertently.
How did adware install on my computer?
PUAs are usually installed through deceptive ads, mostly those displayed on untrusted web pages or when software developers include them into the set-ups of other programs. This latter distribution method of PUAs is known as "bundling" - it is a deceptive marketing technique that developers use to trick people into downloading and installing PUAs with other software.
Generally, information about additional apps is presented in "Custom", "Advanced" and other similar parts of set-ups, however, people often fail to check and change the settings, thus inadvertently allowing PUAs to be downloaded and installed with regular software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Download software and files from official, trustworthy websites and via direct download links, especially if the software is free. Third party downloaders, installers, Peer-to-Peer networks (torrent clients, eMule), unofficial websites and other similar channels, tools should not be used.
Check settings such as "Advanced" and "Custom" of the setup and dismiss offers to download or install PUAs. Do no click intrusive ads that are displayed on dubious websites - typically, these lead to other untrusted websites or even cause unwanted downloads and installations.
If you believe that a PUA is already installed, remove all unknown, suspicious extensions, plug-ins and add-ons from the browser and software of this kind from the operating system immediately. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
