What is dernevious[.]com?
Similar to mega-deals.mobi, generallocationgo.com, solo85.biz, and countless others, dernevious[.]com is a rogue site that forcibly feeds users with dubious content and generate redirects to other untrustworthy and malicious websites.
Few visitors to dernevious[.]com access it intentionally - most are redirected by intrusive ads or Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs) already installed on the device. These apps do not need express user permission to infiltrate systems. Once successfully installed, they cause redirects, run ad campaigns, and monitor users' browsing activity.
dernevious[.]com first checks visitors' IP (Internet Protocol) addresses to learn their geolocations. This data is key in determining its further course of action. According to the geolocations, the site redirects users elsewhere and/or presents them dubious content.
Note that this website employs browser notifications, the consent option to which it hides within 'clickbait' ("Click Allow, to play video/ Streaming and downloading services are available/ This window can be closed by clicking 'Allow' "). If consent is given, dernevious[.]com starts running intrusive advertisement campaigns.
These ads are a safety threat, as they redirect to untrustworthy and malicious web pages and can execute scripts to stealthily download/install PUAs. As mentioned, unwanted applications cause redirects to likewise harmful websites and run ad campaigns.
By employing various tools, they enable third party graphical content on any site. Thereby, delivering intrusive advertisements, which can diminish the browsing experience (limit browsing performance and overlay page content). Furthermore, some PUAs have data tracking abilities.
They record browsing activity (URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries typed, etc.) and gather users' personal information (IP addresses, geolocations, and other details). This data is then shared with third parties (often, cyber criminals) seeking to misuse it to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of data tracking apps on systems can cause infiltration and infections, and lead to severe privacy issues (even identity theft). To ensure device and user safety, all dubious applications and browser extensions/plug-ins must be removed immediately upon detection.

There are thousands of PUAs online, most of which share certain similarities. They may seem legitimate and lure users to install by offering "useful" features, however, they rarely work as advertised and are often nonoperational. The only purpose of all unwanted software and content is to generate profit for the developers, whilst regular users receive no value.
PUAs cause redirects to sale-oriented, compromised and malicious web pages, deliver intrusive advertisement campaigns (pop-ups, surveys, coupons, banners, etc.), and collect private data.
How did adware install on my computer?
Some PUAs have "official" download websites, however, they also proliferate via download/installation set-ups of other software. This method of packing regular programs with unwanted or malicious content is called "bundling".
Rushing download/install processes (e.g. ignoring terms, skipping steps and sections, using pre-set options, etc.) increases the risk of PUA infiltration. Intrusive advertisements are also known to proliferate unwanted apps. Once clicked, they can execute scripts designed to initiate stealthy downloads/installs of PUAs.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications
Research software and content to verify its legitimacy, before downloading or installing. Only trustworthy and verified download sources should be used. P2P sharing networks (BitTorrent, eMule, Gnutella, etc.), unofficial and free file-hosting sites, third party downloaders and similar channels are dubious and untrustworthy and should not be used.
Download/installation processes should be treated with caution. This includes reading the terms, exploring all possible options, using the "Custom/Advanced" settings, and opting-out of downloading/installing supplementary apps, tools, features, etc.
Intrusive ads are usually hosted by compromised web pages but may seem normal and innocuous, however, they can redirect to dubious websites (e.g. pornography, adult-dating, gambling, etc.). If you experience ads/redirects of this type, study the device and immediately remove all suspicious applications and/or browser extensions/plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.

How to avoid browser notification spam?
Internet users should be very skeptical when being asked to allow notifications. While this is a useful feature that allows you to receive timely news from websites you like, deceptive marketers frequently abuse it.
Only allow notifications from websites that you fully trust. For added security - use an anti-malware application with a real-time web browsing monitor to block shady websites that tries to trick you into allowing spam notifications. We recommend using Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows.
