Uninstall the VideoConverterHD toolbar from your browser
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is hp.myway.com?
VideoConverterHD is a browser app (toolbar) designed by Mindspark. According to developers, VideoConverterHD allows users to download videos from video-sharing sites and convert them to over twenty file formats.
Unfortunately, this app/toolbar is categorized as a potentially unwanted application (PUA), a browser hijacker. People often download and install PUAs unintentionally.
Typically, apps such as VideoConverterHD can be installed on browsers such as Firefox, Chrome, and Explorer. Browser hijacking apps change browser settings such as the homepage, default search engine, and new tab URL. In this case, VideoConverterHD assigns them to hp.myway.com.
Therefore, VideoConverterHD users are forced to visit the aforementioned URL when they open the hijacked browser (new window), a new browser tab, or search using the URL bar. Generally, these apps prevent users from changing the settings as long as the app is installed.
Therefore, the only way to change or undo the settings appointed by VideoConverterHD is to uninstall the hijacking app. Information tracking is also an issue. Most browser hijackers gather details relating to users' browsing habits. For example, IP addresses, geolocations, URLs of visited pages, entered search queries, etc.
All gathered information is shared with other parties who misuse it to generate revenue. Thus, having these apps installed might lead to various problems with online privacy, browsing safety, and so on. Therefore, uninstall apps such as VideoConverterHD immediately.

Supposed Functionality | This app (toolbar) supposedly downloads videos from video-sharing sites and converts them into various other formats. |
Promoted URL | hp.myway.com |
Affected Browser Settings | Homepage, new tab URL, default search engine |
Detection Names | Avast (Win32:UnwantedSig [PUP]), DrWeb (Adware.MyWebSearch.145), ESET-NOD32 (Win32/Toolbar.MyWebSearch.BA Potentially Unwanted), Kaspersky (Not-a-virus:HEUR:WebToolbar.Win32.Agent.gen), Full List Of Detections (VirusTotal) |
Symptoms | Manipulated Internet browser settings (homepage, default Internet search engine, new tab settings). Users are forced to visit the hijacker's website and search the Internet using their search engines. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers. |
Damage | Internet browser tracking (potential privacy issues), display of unwanted ads, redirects to dubious websites. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
There are more apps of this type online, including YourTemplateFinder, GardeningEnthusiast, and CrazyForCrafts.
These are just some examples. Generally, PUAs are presented as useful applications that supposedly provide a number of features. Unfortunately, they operate as browser hijackers and promote dubious websites, fake search engines (by changing browser settings), and gather data. Most apps of this type deliver no useful features or any other value.
How did VideoConverterHD install on my computer?
PUAs can be downloaded from download websites, however, they are usually installed together with other software or through intrusive (deceptive) advertisements. To trick people into unintentional downloads and installations, developers use a deceptive marketing method called "bundling".
They add (bundle) PUAs into the set-ups of other software. Generally, information about this additional software can be found in setup settings such as "Custom", "Advanced", and so on, however, people often do not check the settings, thus granting permission for PUAs to be downloaded and installed.
In other cases, people inadvertently install PUAs when they click dubious ads capable of starting the download/installation processes of various unwanted apps.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
All applications/software should be downloaded from official and trustworthy websites. Avoid using third party software downloaders, installers, unofficial web pages, and so on.
Download/install programs properly - check each available option (such as "Custom", "Advanced") of any setup and dismiss offers to change browser settings, download or install additional apps, and so on. Intrusive ads (especially if displayed on dubious sites) can open potentially malicious web pages.
Therefore, do not trust ads or web pages of this type. If a browser opens untrustworthy websites or displays unwanted ads, check for unwanted plug-ins, extensions, or add-ons installed on your browser or programs installed on the operating system. Remove all suspicious, unwanted software immediately.
If your computer is already infected with VideoConverterHD, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
