How to uninstall NameSync adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is NameSync?
Identical to GeneralNetSearch, Resourcetools, GlobalTechSearch, and a number of others, NameSync is an adware-type application that claims to enhance the browsing experience. Initially, NameSync may seem legitimate, however, this app typically infiltrates systems without permission. In addition, it delivers intrusive advertisements and causes unwanted browser redirects.
This application redirects to a dubious website when users attempt to search the Internet. The process works as follows: 1) user enters a search query; 2) NameSync redirects them to a dubious URL; 3) users are presented with search results generated by the Google search engine.
Other applications from this adware family are known to deliver results generated by the Bing and Yahoo search engines. Whether NameSync does this is currently unknown, however, it might be used to generate web traffic or record information such as search queries, IP addresses, websites visited, and so on.
In any case, these redirects significantly diminish the browsing experience. Adware-type applications are also known to display intrusive advertisements. They typically deploy coupons, banners, pop-ups, and other similar ads. To achieve this, criminals employ tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site.
Therefore, the ads often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience. In addition, intrusive advertisements typically redirect to dubious websites and can even execute scripts to download/install unwanted (potentially malicious) applications.
Therefore, even a single accidental click might result in high-risk computer infections. For these reason, NameSync should be uninstalled immediately.

All potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) are very similar. By offering many "useful features", they attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, apps such as NameSync typically have just one purpose: to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than giving any real value for regular users, PUAs deliver advertisements, cause redirects, and gather data.
How did NameSync install on my computer?
PUAs such as NameSync are usually proliferated using the aforementioned intrusive advertisements and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Developers know that users often rush download/installation processes and skip steps. Therefore, all unwanted apps are concealed behind "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections) of the download/installation processes.
Carelessly skipping these steps or clicking advertisements can lead to inadvertent installation of rogue apps. In this way, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent infiltration by PUAs, be very cautious during the download/installation processes and when browsing the Internet. Carefully analyze each step of the download/installation processes using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Decline offers to download/install third party applications and opt-out of those already included.
You are advised to download programs from official sources only, preferably using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers usually include rogue apps and thus these tools should not be used.
Be aware that intrusive advertisements usually seem legitimate, however, they redirect to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, and similar). If you encounter these advertisements, eliminate all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with NameSync, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate this adware.
