MM Player Unwanted Application (Mac)
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is "MM Player"?
MM Player is presented as a high performance video player for MacOS systems. This may seem to be a legitimate application, however, it is promoted through a website from which it can be downloaded. Developers also distribute it using the "bundling" method.
Apps proliferated in this way are categorized as potentially unwanted applications (PUAs). Typically, people install PUAs unintentionally. Furthermore, MM Player's installer also promotes PUAs (adware-type apps) using the "bundling" method.
It is very likely that people with MM Player installed on their computers have unintentionally installed other PUAs (adware-type apps). These usually deliver intrusive ads and collect browsing-related (and other) data. Once installed, PUAs feed users with coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, and so on.
Intrusive ads displayed by adware usually conceal underlying content of visited websites (they are displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site). Additionally, when clicked, these ads can open dubious, untrustworthy websites that might contain malicious content.
Alternatively, they execute scripts designed to download and install other unwanted apps. Furthermore, many PUAs continuously collect data that developers share with third parties.
The data includes browsing-related information such as entered search queries, URLs of visited websites, IP addresses, geo-locations, and so on, however, PUAs also target personal, sensitive information. Third parties who receive the data might be cyber criminals. Therefore, all PUAs should be uninstalled immediately.
Name | MM Player potentially unwanted application |
Threat Type | Mac malware, Mac virus |
Symptoms | Your Mac became slower than normal, you see unwanted pop-up ads, you get redirected to shady websites. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers, torrent file downloads. |
Damage | Internet browsing tracking (potential privacy issues), displaying of unwanted ads, redirects to shady websites, loss of private information. |
Malware Removal (Mac) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your Mac with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
Most PUAs are promoted as 'useful', however, in this case, MM Player promotes various adware-type apps. When installed, these apps usually generate revenue for the developers. Thus, having PUAs installed often results in various problems relating to privacy, browsing safety, and so on. Do not trust any PUAs.
How did potentially unwanted applications install on my computer?
Typically, potentially unwanted apps are promoted using the "bundling" method mentioned above. Software developers use this method to trick people into downloading/installing unwanted apps together with other, regular software.
They fail to disclose information regarding the inclusion of PUAs in installation/download set-ups and hide adware and other PUAs in "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings of these processes. Despite this, such inadvertent installations are generally caused by users who leave all available settings unchecked and unchanged.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Avoid using third party software downloaders (peer-to-peer networks such as torrents, and so on) or untrustworthy websites as sources to download software. The best way to download software is using official, trustworthy websites and direct links. During the installation process, study "Advanced", "Custom" and other parts of the installation process.
Deselect all unwanted applications and only then complete the installation. Avoid clicking intrusive advertisements - they often seem legitimate but can redirect to untrustworthy websites such as gambling, pornography, adult dating, etc.
If you encounter unwanted redirects or ads that redirect you to suspicious websites, check for unwanted extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons installed on your browser. Also check the list of installed programs on your computer. If you find any unwanted entries, remove them immediately.
If your computer is already infected with PUAs, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for macOS to automatically eliminate them.
