System-notification.tools POP-UP Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is system-notification.tools?
Like most rogue websites of this type (such as plicnewsupdate.info, newsupdatewe.info, corecontentdelivery.com, etc.), system-notification.tools redirects visitors to other potentially malicious/untrustworthy sites. Most users do not visit this website willingly - they are redirected by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that are installed without users' direct permission, cause redirects, deliver ads, and gather data.
Once installed, potentially unwanted applications of this type force browsers to regularly open new tabs/windows and redirect users to system-notification.tools. This website then causes even more (usually two or three) redirects to other untrustworthy sites that might be malicious.
Thus, visiting system-notification.tools can result in high-risk computer infections. Another downside of PUAs is the intrusive ads they deliver. PUAs deliver ads (coupons, banners, surveys, etc.) that are displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site.
The displayed content (ads) usually conceal underlying content of any visited website, significantly reducing the browsing experience. Furthermore, most PUAs gather data including IP addresses, keystrokes, URLs of visited websites, search queries, geo-locations, and private details.
They share this information with third parties (possibly, cyber criminals) who misuse it to generate revenue. If the data is misused by criminals, users could experience privacy/browsing safety problems or even identity theft. Therefore, you should remove all installed PUAs immediately.
Generally, potentially unwanted applications generate revenue by delivering ads, gathering and sharing information, and causing unwanted redirects. In most cases, they provide none of the functionality promised or deliver any other real. Users often end up experiencing privacy/browsing safety issues or even more serious problems.
How did adware install on my computer?
Many potentially unwanted applications have official websites from which they can be downloaded, however, most are installed through intrusive advertisements or when software developers use "bundling". Bundling is a deceptive marketing method used to install PUAs together with other regular software.
Typically, PUAs are hidden in "Custom", "Advanced" and other options/settings of the installation processes. To trick users into installing PUAs, developers often do not disclose information about presence of PUAs. Furthermore, they are aware that many users install software without studying installation steps, or simply skip them - they use this to their advantage.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent installation of potentially unwanted applications, avoid using third party software downloaders, torrents, and other similar software. You are advised to use official and trustworthy websites/sources only. Check all available options ("Custom", "Advanced", "Manual", etc.) and opt-out of offers to install additional software.
Avoid clicking intrusive ads (especially when visiting unknown websites). Most internet ads may seem legitimate, but if you encounter ads that cause redirects to gambling, pornography, adult dating, or other similar websites, check the list of installed applications on your browser and uninstall/remove any unwanted extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons.
The same applies to programs installed on your computer. If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
