Notify.support POP-UP Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is notify.support?
Like most rogue websites (including seodollars.com, trkur4.com, tityx.com, etc.), notify.support redirects visitors to other untrustworthy/potentially malicious sites.
Research shows that most users arrive at notify.support unintentionally - they are redirected to it by potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) that are often installed inadvertently. Most PUAs serve identical purposes: to deliver intrusive ads, collect information, and cause redirects to untrustworthy websites.
Once installed, potentially unwanted applications open a new browser window/tab and redirect users to the notify.support website. Following this redirect, users are forced to visit additional (typically 2-3) untrustworthy sites that might be malicious and cause high-risk computer infections.
Another downside of PUAs is intrusive ads that are delivered as coupons, banners, surveys, pop-ups, etc., and displayed via tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site and conceal underlying content. Do not click these ads, since they redirect users to untrustworthy websites.
Some might run scripts that download and install other potentially unwanted applications or malware. Furthermore, potentially unwanted applications tend to record user-system information (such as IP addresses, keystrokes, geo-locations, visited websites, search queries, etc.).
Later, PUA developers share the collected data with third parties (potentially cyber criminals) and use it to generate revenue.
Furthermore, some of the gathered data might include personal details that are shared with PUA developers, thus putting users in danger of privacy issues or even identity theft. If you have potentially unwanted applications installed on your system, uninstall them immediately.
Name | notify.support pop-up |
Threat Type | Adware, Unwanted ads, Pop-up Virus |
Symptoms | Seeing advertisements not originating from the sites you are browsing. Intrusive pop-up ads. Decreased Internet browsing speed. |
Distribution methods | Deceptive pop-up ads, free software installers (bundling), fake flash player installers. |
Damage | Decreased computer performance, browser tracking - privacy issues, possible additional malware infections. |
Malware Removal (Windows) | To eliminate possible malware infections, scan your computer with legitimate antivirus software. Our security researchers recommend using Combo Cleaner. |
Most potentially unwanted applications of this type are very similar or identical and have the same purpose - to give the impression of legitimacy by offering "useful" features and to trick users into downloading them.
Developers can then generate revenue by sharing the collected data, providing intrusive ads, and causing unwanted redirects to potentially malicious websites. It is likely that installed PUAs will not provide the functionality promised and will only cause problems.
How did adware install on my computer?
Most potentially unwanted applications can be downloaded from their official websites, however, they are commonly installed through intrusive advertisements, third party software downloaders/installers, or via a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Bundling is stealth installation of third party applications/programs within other regular software.
Research shows that software developers do not disclose PUA installations properly and hide them in "Custom", "Advanced" sections (and other similar settings/options) of the installation processes. Developers are aware that many users skip installation steps without checking any of the aforementioned settings or steps, and they use this careless behaviour to their advantage.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Avoid using third party software downloaders/installers to download or install software. Download software from official and trustworthy websites/sources only. Install software carefully - do not skip installation steps. Check the "Custom", "Advanced" and other settings when installing software and op-out of unwanted offers.
Do not leave unticked checkboxes implying that you agree to install additional software. Avoid clicking intrusive ads, even if they appear legitimate - not all are. Some intrusive ads might redirect you to potentially malicious or untrustworthy websites such as gambling, pornography, adult dating, and so on.
If you happen to click one of these ads, close the opened window/tab immediately and check installed extensions, plug-ins, and add-ons on your browser, and programs on your computer. If there are any suspicious/unwanted entries, uninstall/remove them immediately.
If your computer is already infected with rogue applications, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate them.
