Kimetrak Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Kimetrak?
Kimetrak is a deceptive application that supposedly helps users to analyze which websites, add-ons, and services are tracking their web browsing activity.
This app might seem legitimate and useful, however, Kimetrak is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware. There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) infiltration without users' consent; 2) display of intrusive advertisements, and; 3) tracking of web browsing activity.
Immediately after infiltration, Kimetrak delivers various intrusive advertisements, such as coupons, banners, pop-ups, and so on. To achieve this, developers employ tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, ads often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience.
Furthermore, they can redirect to malicious websites and execute scripts that download and install PUPs/malware. Therefore, even a single click might result in high-risk system infections. Furthermore, be aware that Kimetrak itself records various user-system information.
IP addresses, websites URLs visited, pages viewed, queries entered into search engines, and other collected information typically includes personal details that are shared with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These people misuse private information to generate revenue.
Therefore, the presence of a data-tracking app such as Kimetrak might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly recommend that you uninstall Kimetrak adware immediately.

There are many adware-type applications very similar to Kimetrak including ShutDownTime, ProxyGate, and CAUTHRON. By offering a wide range of "useful features", adware-type applications attempt to trick users to install, however, since their only purpose is to generate revenue for the developers, they deliver no real value for regular users.
Associated PUPs deliver intrusive ads and gather sensitive information, thereby posing a direct threat to your privacy and browsing experience.
How did Kimetrak install on my computer?
Although Kimetrak has an official download/promotion website, it often infiltrates systems without consent, since developers proliferate PUPs using intrusive advertisements and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" (stealth installation of third party software with regular apps).
Developers are not honest enough to disclose PUP installations properly, and thus hide them within "Custom/Advanced" settings (or other sections of the download/installation processes).
Furthermore, many users rush these procedures and skip steps. In addition, they click advertisements without understanding the possible consequences. This behavior leads to inadvertent installation of PUPs such as Kimetrak. In this way, users expose their systems to risk of various infections and compromise their privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Lack of knowledge and careless behavior are the main reasons for computer infections. The key to safety is caution. Therefore, pay close attention when browsing the Internet and downloading/installing software. Carefully analyze each window of the download/installation dialogs and opt-out of all additionally-included programs.
We recommend that you download software from official sources only, using direct download links. Third party downloaders/installers are monetized using the "bundling" method (they promote PUPs). Therefore, these tools should never be used.
Note that intrusive advertisements typically seem legitimate, but once clicked, redirect to dubious websites (gambling, adult dating, pornography, and so on). If you encounter these ads, immediately remove all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins.
If your computer is already infected with Kimetrak, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this adware.
