Error Code - 022-100-006 Scam

What is Error Code - 022-100-006?
Similar to Call Microsoft Support, CRITICAL ALERT FROM MICROSOFT, Windows Firewall Warning Alert, and many others, "Error Code - 022-100-006" is a fake error message claiming that the system is infected. This error is displayed by a malicious website that users often visit inadvertently - they are redirected by potentially unwanted programs (PUPs).
In most cases, these programs infiltrate systems without permission. As well as causing redirects, potentially unwanted programs deliver intrusive advertisements, gather sensitive information, and misuse system resources to run unwanted background processes.
As mentioned above, "Error Code - 022-100-006" claims that the system has detected a number of infections and, in addition, confidential information (logins/passwords, banking information, etc.) is at risk. These statements are followed by requests to contact 'Microsoft tech support' via a toll-free telephone number ("1-800-957-031").
"Certified technicians" then supposedly help victims to remove the infections and return systems to their previous states. In fact, the "Error Code - 022-100-006" error is fake and has nothing to do with Microsoft. Cyber criminals merely attempt to scare and trick victims into calling the telephone number.
They claim to be technicians and demand payment in exchange for tech support that is not needed - all claims regarding the infection are false. Research shows that some criminals often demand remote access to callers' computers. They do this to install malware and change system settings. They then claim to "detect" additional issues and offer further help for extra fees.
For these reasons, ignore "Error Code - 022-100-006" and never attempt to call the telephone number. This error can be removed by closing the web browser (preferably, using Task Manager) or rebooting the system (some rogue sites are known to use scripts that prevent users from closing the browser).
Note that after re-running the web browser, you should not restore previous session/closed tabs, otherwise you will return to the malicious website.
PUPs deliver intrusive advertisements (coupons, banners, pop-ups, and others) by employing various tools that enable placement of third party graphical content on any site. The ads often conceal underlying website content, diminishing the web browsing experience.
Intrusive ads can also redirect to malicious websites and even run scripts that download/install malware (or other potentially unwanted programs). Even a single click might result in high-risk computer infections.
Be aware also that potentially unwanted programs record information (e.g., keystrokes, search queries, URLs visited, pages viewed, etc.) that often contains personal details.
Collected data is typically sold to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) who generate revenue by misusing users' confidential details, Therefore, information tracking might lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. Furthermore, potentially unwanted programs mine cryptocurrencies or run other unwanted processes in the background.
By stealthily misusing resources, PUPs significantly diminish overall system performance. For these reasons, these programs must be uninstalled immediately.

"Error Code - 022-100-006" is virtually identical to dozens of other fake errors. All claim that the system is infected, missing files or damaged/corrupted in other similar ways. In fact, errors such as "Error Code - 022-100-006" are designed only to extort money from unsuspecting users. All potentially unwanted programs are very similar.
Most claim to enable various useful features (anti-virus, system optimization, download performance increase, etc.) PUPs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than enabling the functionality promised, these rogue programs pose a direct threat to your privacy and Internet browsing safety.
How did potentially unwanted programs install on my computer?
Some PUPs have official download websites, however, most are proliferated using 'malvertising' (intrusive ads) and a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party applications together with regular software/apps. These apps typically infiltrate systems without permission.
Developers are aware that many users rush when downloading and installing software. Therefore, they hide bundled applications within "Custom/Advanced" settings of the download or installation processes. Many users rush and skip download/installation steps, and click various advertisements - this often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
The main reasons for computer infections are poor knowledge and careless behavior. Pay close attention when downloading/installing software and browsing the Internet. Select "Custom/Advanced" settings and closely observe each step of the download/installation processes.
Decline offers to download/install third party applications and opt-out of those already included. Download your applications from official sources only, using a direct download link. Third party downloaders/installers are monetized by promoting ("bundling") rogue apps, and thus, such tools should not be used.
Intrusive ads typically look legitimate but are easy to distinguish, since most redirect to dubious websites (e.g., pornography, adult dating, gambling, etc.) If you see these ads, immediately eliminate all suspicious applications and browser plug-ins. Using anti-virus/anti-spyware suite is also paramount. The key to computer safety is caution.
