Chromesearch.online Redirect

Also Known As: chromesearch.online browser hijacker
Damage level: Medium

What is chromesearch.online?

Identical to chromesearch.info, chromesearch.win, chromesearch.today, and many others, chromesearch.online is a fake Internet search engine that, according to developers, significantly enhances the browsing experience by generating improved results.

Judging on appearance alone, chromesearch.online may seem similar to Bing, Yahoo, Google, and other legitimate search engines. For this reason, many users believe that chromesearch.online is also legitimate.

In fact, developers promote this site via browser-hijacking download/installation set-ups. Furthermore, it continually records information relating to users' Internet browsing habits.

chromesearch.online browser hijacker

Rogue set-ups target Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox. Following infiltration, set-ups modify the new tab URL, homepage, and default search engine options by assigning them to chromesearch.online. In addition, they stealthily install a number of "helper objects" (potentially unwanted programs [PUPs] and/or browser plug-ins).

Therefore, returning browsers to their previous states becomes impossible - "helper objects" reassign browser settings when attempts are made to change them. Therefore, users are unable to revert changes performed by rogue set-ups.

Ultimately, users are encouraged to visit chromesearch.online when they search via the URL bar or simply open a new browser tab, significantly diminishing the web browsing experience. Be aware that chromesearch.online (and "helper objects") gather various information relating to users' Internet browsing activity.

Collected data might contain personal details that developers sell to third parties (potentially, cyber criminals). These details are often misused to generate revenue.

Therefore, information tracking can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. If you experience redirects to chromesearch.online. immediately eliminate all dubious applications/plug-ins and scan the entire system with a legitimate anti-virus/anti-spyware suite. Never return to this website.

The Internet is full of fake search engines that share similarities with chromesearch.online. These sites typically offer improved results and various other "useful features" (shortcuts to popular sites, weather forecasts, currency exchange rates, etc.), however, claims to enhance the web browsing experience are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy.

These sites are designed only to generate revenue for the developers. Rather than giving any real value for regular users, websites such as chromesearch.online cause unwanted redirects and gather private data. Some fake search engines are also designed to feed users with intrusive advertisements and misleading search results.

In these cases, users are redirected to malicious sites. Therefore, using any fake search engine might lead to high-risk computer infections.

How did chromesearch.online install on my computer?

As mentioned above, this site is promoted using rogue downloaders/installers. This deceptive marketing method is called "bundling". Developers are aware that users are very likely to rush download/installation processes and skip steps.

Therefore, they hide details of browser modifications within "Custom/Advanced" options (or other sections of the download/installation processes). By skipping steps, many users inadvertently grant set-ups permission to modify settings, thereby exposing the system to risk of various infections and compromising privacy.

How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?

Installation of potentially unwanted programs (e.g., "helper objects") can be prevented simply by paying close attention during the download/installation processes, and when browsing the Internet in general. Always choose "Custom/Advanced" settings, closely observe each step, and decline offers to download/install additional applications.

You are also advised to avoid using third party downloaders/installers since they often proliferate ("bundle") rogue programs. Software should be downloaded from official sources only, using direct download links.

Be aware that PUPs are also distributed using intrusive ads that typically look legitimate, but redirect to gambling, adult dating, pornography, and other dubious sites. Furthermore, most are delivered by other adware-type PUPs. If you encounter such ads, should remove all suspicious programs and browser extensions.

IMPORTANT NOTE! Rogue set-ups install Google Chrome extensions as Administrator (read more here), thereby preventing removal. Therefore, before taking any further removal steps, perform these actions:

1) Open the Command Prompt by clicking the start menu button and typing "command prompt". Right click the "Command Prompt" result and select "Run as Administrator":
