Spzan.com Redirect
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is spzan.com?
spzan.com is a rogue website identical to many websites, including aptitudemedia.co, eatyellowmango.com, and click-cpa.net. The site redirects to various other suspicious sites. Research shows that users are redirected to spzan.com by potentially unwanted programs (PUPs).
These deceptive applications usually infiltrate systems without consent, or trick users to install by falsely claiming to enable various "useful features". As well as redirects, PUPs generate intrusive online advertisements and continually record information relating to web browsing activity.
PUPs randomly open new browsing windows and redirect to spzan.com. After visiting this site, users encounter other redirects to random suspicious websites. The end point (the suspicious website) might contain links to other malicious websites. Therefore, these redirects can result in high-risk computer infections.
PUPs also deliver intrusive online advertisements (for example, pop-ups, coupons, banners, etc.) These often conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the browsing experience. Furthermore, they might also lead to malicious websites or even run scripts that download and install malware or other PUPs.
Therefore, even accidental clicks can cause additional infections. Another downside is data tracking. Most PUPs record information such as IP addresses, websites visited, pages viewed, search queries, mouse/keyboard activity, and so on. The information might contain private details that PUP developers sell to third parties to generate revenue.
The third parties (potentially, cyber criminals) also aim to generate revenue by misusing personal details. This situation can lead to serious privacy issues. For these reasons, all PUPs should be uninstalled immediately.

The Internet is full of PUPs, all of which are virtually identical. Most offer "useful features" (for example, file sharing, system optimization, etc.), however, these false claims are merely attempts to give the impression of legitimacy. In fact, PUPs are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
They deliver no value for regular users, promote dubious websites, deliver intrusive ads (using the "Pay Per Click" [PPC] advertising model), and track browsing activity. Most PUPs promote fake search engines also designed to generate revenue for the developers.
The behavior of fake search engines barely differs from PUPs - they promote other sites (by generating fake results), deliver intrusive advertisements, and record data. As with intrusive ads, the fake search results can also lead to malicious websites. Therefore, using a fake search engine might lead to computer infections and serious privacy issues.
How did adware install on my computer?
Some PUPs have an official download websites, however, most are distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling", and via the aforementioned ads. Bundling is stealth installation of third party programs with regular software/apps. Developers hide bundled apps within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings.
Many users click intrusive ads, rush the download/installation processes, and skip steps. In doing so, they expose their systems to risk of various infections, compromise their privacy, and inadvertently grant set-ups permission to modify various settings (for example, web browser options).
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent system infiltration by PUPs, be very cautious when browsing the Internet and especially when downloading/installing software. Cyber criminals put a great deal of time, money, and effort into designing intrusive ads. They often seem legitimate, and determining if they originate from the visited (legitimate) website, becomes virtually impossible.
No matter how tempting the ads may seem, never risk clicking them. PUPs are distributed using the aforementioned bundling method. Therefore, download your software from trusted sources only using a direct download URL, rather than third party downloaders.
These tools commonly include additional apps and, thus, using them is very risky - if there are no other options, consider canceling the entire process. It is also important to carefully analyze each download/installation step (especially the "Custom/Advanced" settings) and decline offers to download/install third party programs.
