WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked Scam
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked?
"WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked" is a fake error message displayed by a deceptive website. Research shows that users are redirected to this site by various potentially unwanted programs (PUPs) that infiltrate systems during installation of other software (the "bundling" method).
Furthermore, PUPs continually generate intrusive online advertisements and record user-system information relating to Internet browsing activity.
The "WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked" error message states that the system has been infected and, for this reason, private details (logins/passwords, banking information, etc.) are at risk. The malware must be eliminated immediately. Victims are encouraged to call 'technical support' via a telephone number ("+1-888-616-9444") provided.
They then supposedly receive help in removing the malware. Bear in mind, however, that "WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked" is fake and should be ignored. Its only purpose is to trick victims into calling and paying for technical support that is not required. Never call the telephone number above. This error message can removed simply by closing the web browser.
PUPs often deliver pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar advertisements that conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the browsing experience. In addition, some redirect to malicious websites. Therefore, clicking these ads risks further computer infections.
PUPs also gather various information that might be personally identifiable. This information (website URLs visited, pages viewed, search queries, etc.) is shared with third parties who misuse personal data to generate revenue. This behavior can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We recommend that you uninstall all PUPs immediately.
The "WARNING! Your Windows Has Been Blocked" error shares many similarities with Microsoft System Security Alert, Windows Firewall Blocked The Internet, Ransomware Attack Warning Alert, and many others. All claim that the system is damaged in some way, however, none should be trusted - fake errors are designed only to generate revenue for the developers.
PUPs also have a similar purpose. By offering various 'useful features', they attempt to give the impression of legitimacy, however, rather than providing any significant value for regular users, PUPs cause unwanted redirects, deliver intrusive ads, and record user-system information.
How did adware install on my computer?
As mentioned above, PUPs are distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of third party software with regular apps.
Developers are aware that users often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps. Therefore, they hide bundled programs within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings. Skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue software.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
PUPs are distributed using the "bundling" method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings, closely analyze each step, and decline offers to download/install additional apps.
