How to remove the TrackaPackage browser hijacker?
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is hp.myway.com?
TrackaPackage is developed by Mindspark Interactive Network. It is advertised as an app that helps users to track their shipments quickly and easily. TrackaPackage is a browser hijacker. It is because this app changes browser's settings to promote a fake search engine (hp.myway.com). Also, it collects various information.
Typically, users do not remember installing browser hijackers/users download and install them unintentionally. Therefore, apps of this type (including the TrackaPackage browser hijacker) are called potentially unwanted applications (PUAs).
In most cases, browser hijackers promote fake search engines by changing browser's settings such as the address of a default search engine, homepage, and new tab. Therefore, users of browsers that have some browser hijacker installed on them are forced to visit a specific address when they open enter search queries into the URL bar, open a browser or new tab.
As mentioned in the first paragraph, TrackaPackage promotes the hp.myway.com address (there are many other apps that promote it), the address of a fake search engine. Most fake search engines show results generated by other (legitimate) search engines.
However, sometimes they generate misleading results, display unwanted ads, etc. In one way or another, fake search engines should not be used.
Usually, the address of a fake search engine can be removed from browser's settings only when a browser hijacker that promotes it is no longer installed: it is common for browser hijackers to be designed to prevent users from restoring their original settings.
One more reason to not to trust the TrackaPackage app (or any other browser hijacker) is that this app can access various browsing-related information and may be capable of accessing sensitive data as well. Usually, browser hijackers target Internet Protocol addresses, entered search queries, addresses of visited pages, geolocations, and (or) other browsing data.
However, in some cases, apps of this type can read personal information such as passwords, credit card details, telephone numbers, etc. Moreover, their developers could misuse collected information for marketing purposes, sell it to third parties (potentially cyber criminals) or monetize it in other ways.
Either way, it is not safe to have browser hijackers installed on browsers or computers. If there is one installed, then it should be removed as soon as possible.

How did TrackaPackage install on my computer?
One of the most popular ways to distribute potentially unwanted applications is to bundle them together other programs, mainly with programs that are free. Users download and install bundled applications when they do not opt out unwanted offers/change the settings or untick checkboxes that are available in downloaders and installers.
Typically, offers to download or install unwanted apps can be declined using "Advanced", "Custom", "Manual", or other settings, or checkboxes.
Another way deceptive way to distribute PUAs is to design advertisements to run certain scripts that would download or install unwanted software after being clicked. It is worthwhile to mention that such advertisements appear mostly on questionable, shady websites.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Downloaders and installers that setups that have come checkboxes in the, or settings like "Custom", "Advanced" should be always checked for offers to download or install bundled applications. Programs, files should be downloaded from official websites (and via direct download links).
It is strongly advisable to avoid using third party downloaders, installers, unofficial pages, Peer-to-Peer networks (e.g., torrent clients, eMule), etc. It is common for them to be used to distribute potentially unwanted apps.
Additionally, it is advisable to avoid clicking on ads that appear on questionable pages: those advertisements can be designed to promote shady pages or cause unwanted downloads, installations. If a browser has some unwanted, unknown or suspicious extensions, add-ons or plug-ins installed on it, then those apps should be removed.
Pr programs of this kind that are installed on the operating system should be uninstalled too. If your computer is already infected with TrackaPackage, we recommend running a scan with Combo Cleaner Antivirus for Windows to automatically eliminate this browser hijacker.
