Tables Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Tables?
Tables is a malicious application that infiltrates systems without permission (via the "bundling" method). Following successful infiltration, this app delivers intrusive online advertisements and records various information relating to Internet browsing activity. For these reasons, Tables is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and a browser hijacker.
Following infiltration, Tables delivers pop-up, coupon, banner, and other similar ads by employing a "virtual layer" - a tool that enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying content, significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
Furthermore, these ads often redirect to malicious websites and even accidental clicks can result in high-risk adware or malware infections. Another downside is information tracking. Tables records website URLs visited, pages viewed, queries entered into search engines, Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, and other similar information relating to users' browsing activity.
There is a high probability that the collected data will contain personal details that developers of Tables adware share with third parties (potentially, cyber criminals who misuse the details to generate revenue). Therefore, having an information-tracking app installed can result in serious privacy issues or even identity theft. This adware must be uninstalled immediately.
There are hundreds of adware-type applications virtually identical to Tables including ScreenUp, FirePlayer, and WiseFolderLock - these are just some examples from many. By offering various 'useful features', adware-type apps often trick users into believing that they are legitimate and useful, however, the only purpose of all adware is to generate revenue for the developers.
This software delivers no significant value for regular users. PUPs such as Tables merely deliver intrusive online advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model) and collect various user-system information (which is later sold to third parties).
How did Tables install on my computer?
As mentioned above, developers proliferate Tables by employing a deceptive marketing method called "bundling" - stealth installation of PUPs with regular (usually free) software.
Therefore, users install Tables inadvertently, without their consent. Developers hide all bundled apps within the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings of the download or installation processes. Rushing these procedures and skipping steps exposes systems to risk of various infections and compromises users' privacy.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
To prevent this situation, be very cautious when downloading and installing software. Select the "Custom/Advanced" settings and carefully analyze each step. Furthermore, opt-out of all additionally-included programs and decline offers to download/install them. The key to computer safety is caution.
