Net Surf Adware
Written by Tomas Meskauskas on (updated)
What is Net Surf?
Net Surf is a rogue application that supposedly saves time and money by providing coupons and notifications of special deals/discounts available on various e-shops. This functionality may appear legitimate and useful, however, Net Surf is categorized as a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and adware.
There are three main reasons for these negative associations: 1) stealth installation without consent; 2) display of intrusive online advertisements, and; 3) tracking of users' Internet browsing activity.
Net Surf employs a "virtual layer" to generate pop-up, banner, coupon, and other similar ads. This enables placement of third party graphical content on any site. Therefore, displayed ads often conceal underlying content, thereby significantly diminishing the Internet browsing experience.
In addition, they might redirect to malicious websites - clicking them is risky and can result in further computer infections. Another downside is information tracking. Research shows that Net Surf gathers IP addresses, URLs visited, pages viewed, and other information relating to the web browsing activity.
There is a high probability that this collected information will contain personal details that Net Surf's developers share with third parties (who misuse personal details to generate revenue). Therefore, having an information-tracking app installed on your computer can lead to serious privacy issues or even identity theft. We strongly advise you to uninstall Net Surf adware immediately.
This adware has similar characteristics to Navigate Pro, Tools Plus, Beautiful Desktop, and dozens of other adware-type applications that also claim to enhance the web browsing experience. By delivering these promises, adware-type apps attempt to trick users into believing that they are legitimate and useful.
In fact, the only purpose of all adware is to generate revenue for the developers, whilst regular users receive no value. Adware-type applications simply collect various user-system information (which is later sold to third parties) and deliver intrusive online advertisements (via the "Pay Per Click" advertising model).
How did Net Surf install on my computer?
Research shows that Net Surf has an official download website, however, it is also distributed using a deceptive marketing method called "bundling". Users often install Net Surf inadvertently, without their consent, since they often rush the download/installation processes and skip steps.
Developers hide bundled applications within the "Custom/Advanced" settings and, thus, skipping this section often leads to inadvertent installation of rogue applications such as Net Surf.
How to avoid installation of potentially unwanted applications?
Be aware that PUPs are distributed using the "bundling" method. Therefore, never rush the download or installation processes. Closely analyze each step using the "Custom" or "Advanced" settings and decline offers to download/install additional apps.
